"Penguins" Season 2: Everything We Know
Penguin Season Finale Spoilers If you're a criminal noir TV fan who's not attuned to penguins, you're really missing out. 2024/9/9, HBO premiered the 2022 limited series spin-off Batman, starring Robert Pattinson and Zorn Kravitz, launched a new offshoot of the world of DC Comics' famous superheroes. Just as Batman carved his own lane as a refreshing and brutal neo・noir caper in the bloated superhero genre, Penguin now gives Batman villain Oz Cobb (played by Colin Farrell under heavy prosthetics) a Scorsese-esque gangster epic. Set in the aftermath of Gotham's devastating floods, it follows Oz and former Arkham inmate Sofia Falcone (Christine Milioti) as they fight each other (and many other underworld gangs) for supremacy in a fragile city.
The Penguin was never the end of the story of Oz Cobb, Farrell already returns to Batman's 2026 sequel before the series airs, but fans are also interested in whether the story of Oz and Sofia will continue on a small screen. Below, read everything we know about the possibilities of Penguin Season 2 so far.
HBO has yet to confirm whether Penguin will return to Season 2, and the network may not immediately share an official answer to the fate of the series. In a post-finale interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Lauren Lefranc said the last shot of the penguin showing a glowing bat signal over Gotham was "intended to be put into [Batman director Matthew Reeve's] second film." It was confirmed that.
Another big reason to expect to wait for Penguin Season 2 news is that the show was initially billed as a limited series. Today, the moniker of the limited series is never set in stone (see big little lies, white lotus, Shōgun, etc.).-But LeFranc and Reeves admit that since the start of the series, any further episodes will depend on the reception of Season 1. Now that Penguin has become an Emmy Buzz-certified hit, Reeves told EW that he's looking ahead to the future of the series.
"We're starting to talk about what the way is — me, Lauren, [Reeves' producer partners] Dylan [Clark] and Colin - in a very preliminary way," Reeves told the outlet. "For me, what really matters is winning it. The idea of revisiting means we need to keep the same bar. I know that none of us want to go back and do more. We want to go back and do something great. That's what we're talking about right now. We believe there's something out there, but it's just getting started. But it's exciting. It is very satisfying."
Unfortunately for Penguin fans, Reeves' Batman Epic Crime Saga (yes, that's what the Reeves show and movie franchise is officially called) probably has to focus on Batman Part II before we get the news about Season 2. It will be nice. The long-awaited film is currently scheduled to be released in 2026-10-2, with filming set to begin in 2025. Based on that timeline, we could wait until 2027 for a new episode of Penguin.
While Penguin is a true standalone series and can be enjoyed by viewers without Batman's knowledge, Reeves and Lefranc have developed the series to serve as a bridge between 2022's Batman and the upcoming sequel Batman Part II. After the Riddler terrorist attack destroyed Gotham's bulwark and killed Carmine Falcone (played by John Tarturo), the series is only 1 week from the events of the 2022 film, and now countless fans know the Penguin ending, as Oz Cobb plays Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight in the 2026 film. Become 1 of the main villains who will confront the enemy
Penguin ends with the former Falcone Goon Ozcob now the kingpin of Gotham's criminal underworld, in the season・long Gangwar Season finale with the city's biggest mob family, where he fights his main opposition Sofia Falcone for all the crimes he and she committed throughout the season. He framed her and sent her back to Arkham State Hospital just weeks after she was released. Oz has risen to his greatest heights — literally as he now lives in a penthouse with his comatose mother (Deirdre O'Connell) who hates him. He also cemented himself as the absolute worst person after badly strangling his loyal lazy Victor Aguilar (Renzi Ferris).
However, there are some signs that the rise of Oz is only temporary. Back in Arkham, Sofia receives a letter from Serena Kyle, aka Catwoman (Zou Kravitz), hoping to connect. The team-up of 2 scoundrels against Oz and the potential revenge plan will depend on when Sofia is freed from Arkham. Someone else was able to get Oz much faster.
The season ends with an obvious bat signal in the sky, indicating that the bat will soon come back to defeat Oz. Speaking to Ew (where he was, we'll hopefully learn with Batman Part II), LeFranc explained, "I was very fond of the idea that Batman would undercut the weird and delusional scenario that Oz finally created for himself. To say that he deserved all of his previous actions, and "I finally made it.""And we to say, "Maybe not."
The return cast for Penguin Season 2 depends on who makes it out of Batman II alive, but like the Penguin season finale, Return Some fans are hopeful that Vic's betrayal of Oz might have been a dream of heat, but Ferris says his character is dead.
Farrell is very open about sharing his thoughts on returning for the second season during the Penguin run. On May 9, before the series aired, he gave a full movie interview that he hated wearing the head・to—toe prosthetics that came with his Oz Cobb transformation "Don't misunderstand Me - I loved it - but it got into me a bit." By the end of it, I was whining and moaning to those who would listen to me that I wanted it to be over," he said of filming the series, "When I finished, I never wanted to put that fucking suit and that fucking head down again."
However, speaking with the Hollywood Reporter for the Season 1 finale, Farrell said that he was back for the right story, especially after the series was very well received, "There was a great idea (for Season 2), the writing was really muscular, and it worked harder or harder on the page than the first season." Of course I'm not the only cast member who's teased that it
Farrell would come back for more Penguins if they were getting stronger. In an interview with Esquire, Milioti revealed that he wants to reprise his role as Sofia Gigante. When asked what role she would like to play in the future, she said, "I love playing Sofia again, but I'm also very interested — I mean, this is off the top of my head." I saw Colin in the prosthesis and I would say that I became like, "I want to try it."I would like to try it."It's so brutal. What a brutal way to start your morning. It's three hours every day. But I'm like, "Oh, I want to do that." I would like to try it once.'"
