Kaia Gerber Steps Up Her It-Girl-Approved Winter Shoe Styling in a Tiny Halter LBD

With a closet like Kaia Gerber's, you can create an impressive holiday party outfit with just three items and pull off the winter shoe trend by several degrees.

The model and Saturday Night star attended A24's “Baby Girl” premiere after-party on December 11, dressing to rank on this winter's nice list. Unknown to the author, the festivities at Chateau Marmont included a photo shoot with Santa Claus in front of the Christmas tree, and Gerber joined in game-like with her friends. Wearing a Tom Ford micro-mini halter dress with ribbon detail at the neck and a completely open back, she was snapped sitting on a friend's lap. Underneath, she layered kitten-heeled open sandals over almost sheer black tights, dipping her toes into the winter shoe trend.

It was the official definition of minimalist dressing: an LBD, heels, and tights were the only three things Gerber wore to the party. They corroborated other signs I had seen about the renaissance of tights and heels.

While Kaia Gerber wore a Tom Ford mini with anonymous black heels and stockings in a corner of LA, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande coordinated their Chanel outfits with similarly understated styling. Hours before Gomez revealed her engagement ring, she highlighted her white double-strap Chanel peep-toe heels and paired them with black tights underneath. Ariana Grande, on the other hand, created a mixed textured effect with black pointed toe heels and black tights.

The winter shoe styling trend has been gaining momentum in New York and Los Angeles celebrity street style for some time: Sabrina Carpenter paired micro shorts with a leopard blazer, while Kristen Stewart wore sheer stockings and peep toe heels with knitted hot pants and a cardigan.

Tights, heels, and optional socks are not necessarily a revolutionary combination; by 2023, the proliferation of women wearing sheer red stockings and inventive combinations with patent black heels was on the rise. Still, Kaia Gerber and her It Girl pals have made a compelling case for returning to black and keeping open-toed shoes in store when everyone else is wearing red or green.
