As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle say, royals can't really relocate quietly. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's desire to move to Canada on a part-time basis (open in new tab) has been a hot topic of conversation around the world, but the Canadian government's input will be needed at the same time as other royal families rush to plan the Sussex couple's future.

Today, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made it clear that Harry and Meghan will be welcomed, but noted that details will need to be worked out. Prime Minister Trudeau told Global News (opens in new tab), "I think most Canadians are very supportive of the royals being here, but there is still a lot of discussion about what it will look like, what the costs will be," and "a general appreciation for the Sussexes. added, "but I do have a sense of appreciation for them.

Trudeau added that Canadian officials, like the rest of the world, are still waiting to hear the royal family's final decision on the matter. Just yesterday, it was widely reported that Queen Elizabeth met with Prince Charles, Prince William, and Harry for a "summit" (open in new tab) on the issue. The Queen then issued a statement (opens in new tab) confirming that she had agreed to a "transition period for the Sussex couple to spend time in Canada and the UK" because "Harry and Meghan have made clear their intention not to rely on public funds in their new lives. Nevertheless, she added, " These are complex issues for my family to resolve and there is still work to be done, but I have requested that a final decision be made in the next few days."

Prime Minister Trudeau said that the Canadian government has not yet been contacted by the royal family to discuss the necessary arrangements and costs. (Perhaps government officials are concerned about the expensive security required to keep the high-profile couple safe (opens in new tab)). Trudeau said, "There are still many decisions to be made by the royal family, and by the Sussexes themselves, as to what level of engagement they choose." 'We obviously support the royal family's wishes, but we also have a responsibility to them. ...... We have no idea what the final decision will be."

Neither, it seems, does the royal family itself.
