Georgia Senate Substitute Election Could Flip Senate Blue

Georgia is in the spotlight for the 2020 election. Thanks to myriad organizations like Fair Fight (open in new tab), Black Voters Matter (open in new tab), and the New Georgia Project (open in new tab), the state has flipped blue for the first time in 28 years (open in new tab). Two high-profile federal Senate races, Reverend Raphael Warnock (Democrat) versus Senator Kerry Loeffler (Republican) (opens in new tab) and John Ossoff (Democrat) versus Senator David Perdue (Republican) (opens in new tab), are mandated by Georgia law No candidate received a majority of the votes, so they face a runoff (opens in new tab). If Ossoff and Warnock defeat their opponents, Democrats will regain control of the Senate.

Prior to the 2020 election, Republicans held a 53-47 majority (plus two independents who historically vote Democratic). The Democrats' goal is to win four seats in the Senate, and so far they have succeeded in securing two seats: wins for Arizona Majority Leader Mark Kelly (open in new tab) and Colorado Majority Leader John Hickenlooper (open in new tab). If Democrats win both Georgia races, the Senate will be a 50-50 tie, with incoming Vice President-elect Kamala Harris as the tiebreaker.

If we expect the Senate to flip blue and align with the incoming Democratic President and Vice President along with the House, the following are the main dates to watch, ways you can help even if you live outside of Georgia, and organizations to donate to.

Georgia residents who do not wish to vote in person at a polling place can request an absentee/mail-in ballot starting today. Georgia residents can make sure they are registered to vote here (opens in new tab) and fill out an absentee ballot/vote by mail request here (opens in new tab).

You can find out which issues John Ossoff is prioritizing here (opens in new tab) and which issues Rev. Raphael Warnock is prioritizing here (opens in new tab).

All of these organizations, with the exception of the Ossoff and Warnock campaigns, are nonpartisan and run by people power. Any amount of money will help!
