Who is Ashley Biden, Joe Biden's youngest daughter?

President-elect Joe Biden is close to his entire family, including his youngest daughter, Ashley Biden. You have probably heard less about Ashley than you have about Joe's other children. She leads a quieter, less public life than her older brothers Hunter (opens in new tab) and Beau (opens in new tab) (the latter, who served as Delaware Attorney General, sadly died in 2015.) She married Dr. Howard Crain in 2012, a social worker/ career development and education liaison, she has evolved into a business owner and ardent advocate for social justice. So what else do we know about the soon-to-be First Daughter, the most unassuming of the President-elect's children?

Ashley is Joe's second daughter. Her sister Naomi and Joe's first wife Neria died tragically in a car accident (open in new tab) in 1972 (Naomi's nickname was "Amy" and she was only 15 months old). Joe married Jill Biden in 1977, and Ashley was born in 1981.

Ashley accompanied her father (open in new tab) on his campaign, an experience that propelled her toward a career in activism. She says, "My father always taught me that silence is complicity and that I must stand up for those who are being mistreated. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my adult life and has guided me in my professional life," she explains.

She went to a private high school in Bloomington, Delaware, and then to Tulane University, where she majored in cultural anthropology. Ashley was undecided about her next steps until she decided to pursue her passion for activism, working shifts at a local pizza parlor (open in new tab) In 2010, she earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Policy and Practice.

She was appointed executive director of the Delaware Center for Justice, which focuses on criminal justice reform, in 2014; in 2015, her work suffered a tragedy: her brother Bo (opens in new tab) died of brain cancer. 'It was very important to Ashley to carry on Beau's legacy of criminal justice reform and working with children. Hunter also set an example with the work he was doing. She always had a reason to be involved with them and found a way to follow her own lead"

.

She shared that she knew Bo would be at her father's inauguration: "He died at 46. My dad is going to be the 46th president," she told NBC.

Although she is often out of the limelight, Ashley and her brother Hunter introduced Joe at the Democratic National Convention. 'He is unwavering and treats you with respect, no matter who you are. He loves you dearly." Ashley was one of several family members who joined together to support Joe, including his grandchildren (opens in new tab).

In 2017, Ashley explained to Glamour (opens in new tab) why he has dedicated his life to causes important to him. 'My father was a lifelong public servant and my mother was a public school teacher.

She eventually focused on social justice in education, but according to her, she had a true passion for the cause from an early age:

"As a child, I always really loved animals. I found out that Bonne Bell lip gloss was testing on animals, so I organized my school and started writing letters [to the company]. Then I became obsessed with the plight of dolphins caught in tuna nets." My father connected me with Congresswoman Barbara Boxer, who gave me the nickname "Dolphin Lady."

Having grown up in the public eye, Ashley prefers to keep certain aspects of her life as private as possible. Her Instagram account (opens in new tab) is not publicly accessible, and her attendance at events is mostly low-key.

During her keynote address (opens in new tab) at the Women Rule 2014 Summit in Washington, D.C., Ashley shared her candid feelings about speaking at such a large event. 'It's an honor to be here in a room full of women who rule. There's so much great energy and I feel right at home.

Ashley founded the organization Livelihood after Beau passed away. The goal is to design and sell American-made clothing and donate the proceeds to community organizations in D.C. and Delaware. The organization's intent is to "support criminal justice reform, improve early childhood education, and reduce economic disparities."

In an interview with Delaware Today (opens in new tab), Ashley discussed her reasons for starting this business. Whether it's overcoming incarceration, false choices, or facing the death of a sibling, we can move forward and get better," she said. 'Getting people out of the justice system, or simply providing them with the services they need, is about bringing hope and possibility. I am in this work because this system is dysfunctional. Mass incarceration is not the solution." [On June 2, 2012, Ashley married Klein at the Delaware church where she was baptized (opens in new tab). Biden said at the time, "This is the right man. And he's going to get one heck of a woman." Ashley met Klein in 2010 through her late brother Beau, and the two planned to live less than an hour from Beau in Philadelphia.

According to LinkedIn (opens in new tab), Klein has held several positions: he is the chief medical officer of StartUp Health, which helps "entrepreneurs build sustainable health and wellness companies," is Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's senior director of health policy and Innovation and is an associate professor in Jefferson's Department of Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery). He also has an informal role (opens in new tab) (opens in new tab) (opens in new tab) on the Covid-19 Pandemic Response Team. He appears to be on Instagram, but does not post much.

Joe's notoriously private daughter won new fans at a rally celebrating her father's election victory. From the moment she got on stage with the rest of the family and rejoiced at the results, she couldn't stop dancing.

Fans tweeted clips of her dancing, including "Ashley Biden dancing her way across the stage is a vibe" (Ashley Biden dancing across the stage is a vibe), "Ashley Biden- level energy" (at the next management meeting, she will wear a leopard print face mask and bring Ashley Biden-level energy), he wrote.

Ashley gave her first network interview on the eve of her father's inauguration and said of the Trumps' plans for Inauguration Day: "It's too bad we're not doing the traditional ceremony, but I think we're all good with that." She said she plans to use her platform "to advocate for social justice, to advocate for mental health, to get involved in community development and revitalization."
