Pamela Anderson transforms into a modern-day Jackie Kennedy in a vintage 1960s shift dress.
Pamela Anderson is best known for her wild '90s looks (the “Baywatch” swimsuit, the black corset look, that fluffy pink bucket hat), but she is now in her best fashion era. In recent years, her style has evolved beyond feathers and corsets to something more akin to Jackie Kennedy's closet.
Pamela now favors simplicity, preferring oversized styles with striking silhouettes over skin-tight looks that emphasize the silhouette. Its impact is equally strong, but in a very different way.
Anderson's recent “fits” are truly out of the first lady's playbook: at the Golden Globes' first nomination celebration on December 17, the “Last Showgirls” actor chose yet another ultra-minimalist look. She wore an ivory silk draped 60s shift dress procured by The Kit Vintage. The mod-style midi featured the streamlined shape and mock neckline characteristic of the decade.
In addition to the pearlescent fabric, the only design detail was the three crystal buttons at the collar. In keeping with the theme of elegant simplicity, Anderson paired the dress with sheer tights, black pumps, and only the daintiest of diamond studs.
The clean-lined ivory dress (which actually returned to the trend cycle this fall) was Kennedy's bread and butter during her White House years; in 1961, she wore a sleeveless floor-length gown in the same shiny crepe fabric. Kennedy's featured a fitted bodice and exaggerated bubble skirt, but she wore more shift-style dresses during this period.
Anderson's retro look was a result of Hollywood's overall shift from runway to vintage. More and more stars are turning to vintage curators, seeking out historical pieces from designer archives. The red carpet in particular has seen a boom in designer looks sourced from women-owned vintage stores. [For example, Jennifer Lawrence wore a 2006 Christian Lacroix gown to a documentary premiere last month. The draped gown is from Shrimpton Couture, a celebrity-favorite vintage library specializing in couture. Alarda Vintage, meanwhile, provides clothing for the various outings of celebrities like Zendaya and Sabrina Carpenter, and Bella Hadid recently pulled out a suede corset from Hasbeen Vintage.
For both environmental and fashion reasons, this is a trend I can fully get behind.
