Any celebrity endorsement is good publicity, but Bella Hadid is considered the gold standard of handbag publicity. She was the driving force behind the Brooklyn bag boom of July 2024, propelling Coach's angular tote to stardom virtually overnight.

She has since given dozens of purses (including Coachtopia's Alter/Ego Hobo and Saint Laurent's Y tote) the Midas touch, but none more so than Saint Laurent's signature bag, the Sac de Jour.

Its appeal lies in its name, which translates as “bag of the day.” With its elegant, constructed frame and generous capacity, it elevates the everyday tote. It was first introduced in 2013, when Saint Laurent was still putting Yves front and center. Under the direction of then creative director Hedi Slimane, it hit stores the following year.

Since then, the Sac de Jour has been reincarnated countless times and has been the star of numerous YSL collections. Various shapes, sizes, finishes (patent, studded, metallic, etc.), and colors such as mahogany, emerald, and cobalt blue have been released. But none is as beloved as the simple black croc.

She used the month of December to showcase the endless styling possibilities of this bag. First, on December 11, she coordinated her fan-favorite bag with leather pants and a silk cowl-neck top. The next day, she was spotted carrying the bag again, this time topped with a red and white scarf

This sparked a kind of obsession in Hadid, and she styled the Sac de Jour several more ways the following week; on December 13, she was photographed leaving the Bowery Hotel with the croc bag in hand. At the time, she was using the bag to accent a vintage denim cord.

She then carried the bag one last time before leaving New York. Hadid styled her entire outfit around the statement scarf she had earlier in the week. A cherry red cardigan, light wash jeans, and matching strappy sandals. An ivory duster coat and matted nails completed the glamorous look.

Hadid's week-long romance tells an important story of the bond between a woman and her work tote bag. Its importance cannot be understated.
