Why Selena Gomez's Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane is a Celebrity's Favorite Investment Shoes

Selena Gomez and stylist Erin Walsh adjusted the actress's look when The Hollywood Reporter at the Women's Entertainment event on 12 May. 4, they wanted clothes with award-winning energy. Gomez has won the Equity in Entertainment Award and received her trophy with a passionate speech about representation in the media on stage Along the red carpet, for her walk to the podium, the duo landed in a self-portrait dress and Manolo Blahnik Mary Jane. And really, for now, there was no better power pump.

Her Manolo Blahnik wasn't just an interpretation of the sky・high of the Mary・Jane Renaissance that dominated the shoe trend in 2024. Pointed toe silhouettes, delicate stiletto heels and straps decorated with pearls are an evolution of the style that Hollywood's most powerful women have worn for editorial and red carpet events for three decades.

Mr. Blahnik designed the first Manolo Mary Jane Pump in 1994 - making the pearly iteration of Gomez a 30th anniversary style. The iteration of the 90s, shown in the advertisement in the figure below, was initially inspired by Kate Moss, a budding style star of 10 years.

The model had worn a pair of spiky Mary Jane's in pictures for British Vogue, and it was tweaked so that Manolo Blahnik's team moved their shoes in a more restrained direction. Instead of the luxurious crystal buckle of the Hangisi flat, there is a plain patent leather toe box with delicate buttons on the strap. Soon, a more streamlined design made its way to the famous feet of supermodels Shalom Harlow, Bridget Hall, and Kristy Hume for the Vogue editorial.

Cut in 2024: In the years in between, Manolo Blahnik's version of Mary Jane, from Blake Lively (dressed in a Chanel skirt suit) to Pamela Anderson (Halle Berry, Emma Stone, Sarah Paulson (all major women in Hollywood), has also been featured in the classic series. Mary Jane chose these high heels over flats.

See why Gomez accepts awards with these Manolo more than any other pump, or why many other faces of Hollywood success wear them as well. They are sharp, but not as self-serious as standard closed-toe pumps. They are girly, but adult. It's a hard balance to beat - but when that happens, it might deserve its own trophy.
