Kim Kardashian Contributes Essay Calling for Release of Eric Menendez and Lyle Menendez Amid “Monsters” Release
With renewed interest in the Menendez case of Eric and Lyle after the release of the Netflix movie “Monsters,” Kim Kardashian is using her platform to call for their release from prison.
After a recent visit to the Menendez brothers, who are incarcerated after being convicted of murdering their parents, Kitty and Jose, in 1989, Kardashian wrote an essay “hoping” that their “life sentences will be reconsidered.”
On October 3, the Skims founder published an op-ed in NBCNews calling for a reevaluation of the case. She wrote about how the trial was mishandled, how “the media turned the brothers into monsters and sensational eye candy,” and argued that the abuse and sexual abuse Lyle and Eric experienced led to their murders and would have been viewed differently today.
Kardashian wrote, “After years of abuse and a real fear for their lives, Eric and Lyle chose what they thought at the time was their only way out.
“I have spent time with Lyle and Eric. They are kind, intelligent, honest men.” In prison, they both have exemplary disciplinary records. They have multiple college degrees, care for elderly inmates in hospice, and serve as mentors in college programs; when I visited the prison three weeks ago, one of the wardens said he felt comfortable having them as neighbors”
.
The reality TV star/entrepreneur also explained that shortly after Ryan Murphy's controversial series debuted on Netflix on September 19, 24 members of the Menendez family issued statements of support for Eric and Lyle.
Kardashian said, “I don't think it was the right punishment for this complicated case for them to spend their natural lives incarcerated. If this crime had been committed today and there had been a trial, I believe the outcome would have been dramatically different. I also strongly believe that they were denied a fair second trial and that the exclusion of significant abuse evidence further compromised the fairness of their convictions by denying Eric and Lyle the opportunity to fully explain their case.”
“We owe it to these boys who lost their childhoods and never had the opportunity to be heard, to be helped, to be saved,” she concluded.
Kardashian's open letter was issued less than two weeks after she visited Eric and Lyle at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego, California, on September 21, days after “Monsters” hit streamers.
On October 4, it was announced that progress had been made in the 35-year-old's case; according to CNN, L.A. County District Attorney George Gascon said he plans to review new evidence, including a letter written by Eric, regarding the alleged abuse. A hearing is set for November 29, which could eventually lead to a resentencing.
