Lady Gaga at the London Premiere of “Joker: For a Do

Forget method dressing on the red carpet. Lady Gaga invented her own step-and-repeat category at the London premiere of her film “The Joker”: it's method makeup.

Lady Gaga appeared at the Joker premiere on September 25, less than 24 hours after unveiling a concept album based on her character, DC Comics bad girl Harley Quinn. Styled by Sandra Amador and Tom Erebout, the evening began with a Celine red gown and Tiffany diamonds, evoking Harley Quinn's signature colors. Any other celebrity would have ended with the resemblance, but Gaga dyed her hair and applied several coats of turquoise blue eyeshadow.

Makeup artist Sarah Tanno created a face beat that would have made Gaga look like she could have appeared in a haute couture circus (or recreate her famous MTV VMA “Paparazzi” performance). In reference to Gaga's rain- and tear-soaked makeup in the Joker's bone-jarring trailer, she contrasted her bright, matte turquoise blue eyeshadow with a killerly sharp cat eye. Under her right eye, she intentionally smudged eyeliner across her lower lid and finished with a crystal-studded teardrop.

Normally blonde, she also changed her hair for the red carpet. Hairstylist and wig artist Frederic Aspilas gave Gaga a blunt bob with bangs that dusted the top of her newly bleached eyebrows. The bob was dyed a deep burgundy red with dark brunette layers underneath. (The director said, “Cut!” ) Gaga is the first celebrity to stay in a role for months after the director said, “Cut! Zendaya wore tennis balls chartreuse and Wimbledon white to promote “Challengers,” and Margot Robbie had a dream house full of archival pink dresses to be Barbie. Daisy Edgar-Jones also tipped her ten-gallon hat to “Twisters” in a breezy chiffon dress. However, Lady Gaga's make-up approach was the biggest commitment I've ever seen to bringing a character from the screen to the red carpet, a major departure from the hats, LBDs, and classic pants she previously wore to promote The Joker. At this point, no one expected Lady Gaga to mention Harley Quinn.
