Hit Korean Drama "The Lovely Runner" Comes to Netflix: What We Know
If you're a fan of great K-dramas (or Korean entertainment and culture in general), you've probably heard of The Lovely Runner. Starring Kim Hae-yun and Byun Woo-seok, this tvN drama is one of the most anticipated Korean dramas to air in 2024, with millions of international fans enthralled by its cast and heartwarming time-travel romance. The 16-episode drama follows Im Seol (Kim), a super-fan of K-pop idol Ryu Seung-jae who dies unexpectedly; Seol travels back in time to when the two were high school students and is determined to save Seung-jae's life at all costs.
Since "The Lovely Runner" aired from April 8 to May 28, 2024, the romantic K-drama has become a global phenomenon, resulting in countless fan edits, best-selling products, and the Billboard chart debut of the show's official song. Recently, Netflix announced that the acclaimed series will be available on the world's largest streaming service, bringing the love story of Seol and Sun-jae to an even wider audience. However, U.S. Netflix subscribers may have to wait a little longer to see "The Lovely Runner" on the platform.
On July 15, Netflix announced on its global fan social media account, Netflix K-Content, that "The Lovely Runner" would hit the platform on August 1. Fans celebrated around the world, but by August 1, subscribers learned that the series is only available in certain countries; according to Dextero, all 16 episodes of "The Lovely Runner" are currently available on Netflix in 19 territories: Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar, Laos, East Timor, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Unclear which territories "The Lovely Runner" would be distributed to led many fans to wonder internationally when the K-drama would be available on Netflix around the world; as of August 5, Netflix has not said whether "The Lovely Runner" will be available in more countries. No official mention has been made as to whether or not the series will be available, but fans are hoping that they will have the opportunity to discover the series in more regions.
Currently, "The Lovely Runner" is only available in the United States on Rakuten Viki, one of the largest streaming services dedicated to Asian television and movies. All 16 episodes are available, and the platform has a rating of 9.8 out of 10. For new subscribers, the first two episodes of "The Lovely Runner" are available for free with ads, and the rest are available (ad-free) with Viki Pass Standard for $5.99 per month. For those who need another push to check out the show, Netflix has released a highlight clip that summarizes the premise of the drama and introduces the four main characters: Ryu Sun-jae (Byun Woo-seok), vocalist of the K-pop band Eclipse; Sun-jae's big Sun-jae's biggest fan, Im Seol (Kim Hae-yoon), Seol's first love, Kim Tae-seong (Song Gong-hee), and Sun-jae's best friend and Eclipse band member, Bae In-hyuk (N.Flying's Lee Seung-hyup). WARNING: The Lovely Runner is sure to tug at your heartstrings, but ultimately it's a true HEA rom-com."
