How Nancy Twine practices her 2-minute morning routine

Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock, Marie Claire's weekly peek into the daily lives of the most influential women in their industries. How do these women manage to get their day's work done?

In 2013, Nancy Twine (open in new tab) boldly quit her Wall Street job to pursue her dream of launching a natural hair care line. It turns out that her love of beauty runs in her blood: as a child, she stood in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother, creating DIY hair and skin care recipes, which ultimately inspired Briogio. Twine now holds the title of the youngest black woman to launch a brand at Sephora. What does 24 hours look like for this CEO?

I find 8 or 9 hours of sleep is best. I start each morning with 10 minutes of meditation and a prayer of thanksgiving.

Before COVID, I spent 10 minutes getting ready; after COVID, 2 minutes. I have a fairly simple skin care routine. I don't use a lot of products, but I am very consistent. My face tends to be dry, so in the morning I use IMAGE Skincare AGELESS Total Pure Hyaluronic6 Filler (open in new tab) ($70), Barrier+ Lipid-Boost Jelly (open in new tab) ($50), Biossance 100% Sugarcane Squalane Oil (open in new tab) ($32) cocktail together. I used to use a vitamin C serum daily, but over time my skin became more sensitive and started to break out, so I removed it from my ritual. My nightly routine is pretty similar, but I add extra squalane oil to my moisturizing cocktail to keep it hydrated throughout the night.

When I maintain a blowout, I twist my hair at night and untwist it easily in the morning and comb through my hair so that the blowout still looks fresh. When wearing naturally curly hair, style from scratch with Briogio's Curl Charisma Coil Custard (open in new tab) ($26) and Leave-In Cream (open in new tab) ($20), or refresh curls with a water bottle, Curl Charisma Frizz Control Gel ( (open in new tab) ($20) (open in new tab) a bit to help redefine curls that may have been tweaked a bit while sleeping, so take a little time.

I typically wear my hair down, loosely wavy. For makeup, I like to keep it simple and natural. I use a light coverage foundation (Kosas Tinted Oil (open in new tab), $42), mascara (Thrive Causemetics (open in new tab), $24), brow pomade (Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse (open in new tab), $25), and lip tint (Ilia Arabian Nights (open in new tab), $28).

Kale, berry, and collagen smoothies and tall glasses of green tea.

I like to work out in the morning. It gives me an energy boost first thing in the morning, I love Barry's (opens in new tab), and lately I've been working out at home with the Nike Fitness App (opens in new tab).

Having a ring light makes all the difference in the quality of my videos.

I have weekly acupuncture treatments to keep my mental balance and immune system strong. Also, daily meditation and keeping a gratitude list is a great way to keep positive vibrations high, and while my intentions for wellness have not changed since COVID-19 began, having more time to myself has allowed me to truly follow my intended routine without any excuses I am now able to.

As a young child, I worked with my mother at a health food store where we would buy vegetable oils, wax, I was inspired by the moment I purchased single ingredients such as butter, salt, and sugar and used them to transform them into my own custom beauty essentials. They made everything from hair care to skin care to body care. My mother is one of eight siblings and I grew up making beauty products with her in rural West Virginia. What was once a family tradition became the inspiration for my own clean ingredient hair care line.

I like to wear comfortable PJs at night and always force myself to remove my makeup before bed. If I blow-dry my hair, I twist it at night with bobby pins to maintain loose waves. If I have natural curls, I always sleep on a satin pillow case to reduce friction between the curls and the fabric.

The last thing I do before bed is write down five things I am grateful for during the day.

I like to be in bed by 10:30 pm so I can get up at 6:30 am.
