I'm not drawn to anything fancy. Karaoke, rock concerts (remember those?). I'm in love with a spartan button-down shirt if the cut is just right, and plaid is a subtle, interesting color combination. But of all the things I own, the one that seems most like me is an Original Penguin hoodie with a striking tiger motif print; it's about 10 years old, a little warped and furry in places, but it makes me feel like I'm wearing the Original Penguin of New York City's It's a little warped and a little furry in places, but it gives me the same kind of joy I felt when I wore it on the racks of the Original Penguin store in New York.

Truth be told, I was hesitant to buy this zip-up. I was attracted to the gray and cyan, an unexpected color scheme for a nature-themed design. It was 100 times more gaudy than the other retro sportswear that filled the store. It wasn't until I looked closer that I realized the tigers were nesting in the reeds. Some scrambled through the reeds, others walked lazily, their stripes blending in with the impressionistic wisps of vegetation. I decided to embrace these tigers.

Quite a few years after finding my beloved hoodie, I had another sacred moment at the thrift store. This time it was a Penguin short-sleeved button-down shirt. It was a fateful moment when I found this tiger among dozens of racks crammed with clothing from all eras. The shirt still had its original tag.

I continued to add patterns to my wardrobe, taking it a step further from my usual reliance on solids, stripes, and plaid. My leopard print long-sleeved shirt gets compliments every time I feel extroverted in it. I also began collecting 70s disco shirts with kaleidoscopic patterns. They are loud, but the oversized collars fit my proportions perfectly. I have come to appreciate how eye-catching prints can draw the eye. It allows me to express an attitude and energy that doesn't usually fit my mood. But be careful! All bets are off when I get the urge to layer a hoodie with a tiger motif and a matching shirt.
