Today, America lost an icon. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a Supreme Court Justice beloved by feminists around the world, died at the age of 87 from complications of metastatic cancer of the pancreas (opens in new tab). She was at home in Washington, D.C. with her family. Her death was announced by the Supreme Court.

Her death will bring up many questions in this election year. In February 2016, when Justice Antonin Scalia died, then-President Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland to replace him. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell famously refused to hold hearings for him because of the impending presidential election, and according to NPR (opens in new tab), on her deathbed Ginsburg told her granddaughter, "My most sincere wish is that I will not be replaced until we have a new president."

RBG, as he was affectionately called, was an icon of law and pop culture (opens in new tab). Known for her toothless dissent, passion for equal rights for all, and daily workout routine (opens in new tab), Ginsburg was perhaps the most popular octogenarian in the United States. She was given the nickname "The Notorious RBG" (which became the title of her biography), was played by Kate McKinnon on SNL, and regularly scorched Weekend Update host Colin Jost with Ginsburg.

Ginsburg was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1993, becoming only the second woman to serve on the court. A graduate of Columbia Law School, she became known as a small (in stature) but resourceful (in wit) and powerful lawyer who advocated for equal rights for women in the workplace. Felicity Jones played Ginsburg in the 2018 film "On the Basis of Sex," about her fight to prove that gender discrimination is unconstitutional.
