Senator Lisa Murkowski suggests convicting President Trump.

After a pro-Trump mob attacked the U.S. Capitol (opens in new tab) in the midst of Electoral College certification for the 2020 election, Senator Lisa Murkowski (Republican) has been vocal about her thoughts on President Trump and the final days of his presidency. Before the House impeachment hearing, Murkowski told the Anchorage Daily News (opens in new tab) that Trump should resign immediately and be held accountable for instigating the attack on Capitol Hill.

"I want him to resign. I want him to resign. She said after Trump tweeted that he would not attend President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. 'I think he should leave. He said he would not show up. He is not going to show up for the inauguration."

Based on these comments, Senator Murkowski may be one of the few Republicans who will vote to convict President Trump if a Senate impeachment is scheduled. (The House of Representatives impeached President Trump for the second time on Wednesday (open in new tab). This week, she also said it would be "appropriate" to block President Trump from future office, which would only happen if she believes he has been convicted by the Senate and committed an impeachable offense (opens in new tab).

"What I will tell you is that I believe that this president has committed an impeachable offense through his words on January 6 and through his failure to be honest with the American people about the election and the election results," Makowski told Alaskan television station KTUU on January 13 (open in new tab). 'It is one of the most serious actions we could take, and I think it's an appropriate one. Given his actions and his failure to uphold the Constitution, I think it's an appropriate action."

It is unclear what the future holds for President Trump and whether Senator Murkowski will take action regarding her remarks once the Senate sets a trial date.
