Texas Abortion "Snitch" Site Has Terrible Weekend

When the Supreme Court quietly refuses to block Texas' draconian abortion bill, as it did in the news this week, things seem pretty hopeless. The bill, known as the "Texas Heartbeat Bill" or "SB 8" after its bill number, would effectively ban abortions at six weeks, or when a "fetal heartbeat" is detected by a physician. Never mind that many doctors agree that the science behind this bill is poor (opens in new tab). The worst part of the bill (if one has to choose from the worst part of many) is the section that allows Texans (opens in new tab) to report people who may have aided and abetted abortion seekers or patients and get a $10,000 reward.

Since the Supreme Court did not actually hear the case, it would be extremely cumbersome to challenge the bill in court. Instead, the Court chose to issue an unsigned majority opinion, thereby effectively overturning Roe v. Wade, without presenting the reasoning behind the decision that the Constitution does not favor the Court! The dissenting Supreme Court justices (they noted their names in their dissents, so by process of elimination we know who passed this bill), and President Biden, questioned whether this was even legal (opens in new tab). Meanwhile, clinics in Texas that provide medical care to abortion-seekers often have no choice but to follow the opaque new rules (opens in new tab) until better instructions are provided. Yes, it's a dark story.

But after all the dark talk, there are a few bright spots. First, pro-choice netizens decided to absolutely inundate a so-called "abortion snitch site" (officially named ProLifeWhistleBlower.com) set up by the anti-abortion group Texas Right to Life with false reports (opens in new tab) and Shrek memes When I tried to access the site yesterday, the home page suddenly disappeared from the home page and the rest of the site was quite robustly unresponsive, with error messages. Thanks for protecting our rights, Internet!

Then last night, GoDaddy.com, the domain host of this site, which must always be the first company we think of as the company behind that creepily horny (open in new tab) Outs Super Bowl commercial, discovered that the abortion snitching site was violating its terms of service We've heard that the company has discovered that the abortion-snitching site violates its terms of service. From Gizmodo (opens in new tab):

"... The very nature of the website itself appeared to be in violation of GoDaddy's Terms of Service. The terms of use provide that customers may not use the company's platform in a manner that 'violates the privacy or publicity rights of, or breaches any confidentiality obligations owed to, other users or other individuals or entities.'

Apparently GoDaddy agreed, and told the site's administrators that they had 24 hours to migrate to a new domain host or they would be booted. Looks like the abortion snitch site is having a terrible weekend.

Right now, it is undetermined what is actually happening to the site, but IP addresses from California to New York to Texas appear to be inaccessible. By "security reasons," I mean that one of the memes (opens in new tab) that Redditors have posted on this site en masse, Sexy Shrek (opens in new tab) (link is to SFW, which is disturbing in its own way), is making them feel insecure about their own sexiness I guess that's what they mean. And rightly so! I hope the Texas Right to Life people who set up this website feel bad every day for the rest of their lives.

Thus, at least for now, we say goodbye to the abortion snitching website! And may its cursed resurrection be greeted with a flood of furry porn.
