24 Hours with Jodie Comer
Welcome to Beauty Around the Clock! Marie Claire takes a peek into the daily lives of women in various industries. How do these women manage to get through their day's work?
Villanelle, everyone's favorite assassin in the Emmy Award-winning "Killing Eve" (opens in new tab), literally wears many hats. Every time she kills, she takes on a new persona, accent and all. But it's Jodie Comer (opens in new tab) who actually transforms into a new character almost every episode, and it's understandable that she leaves the house most mornings with a wet head and a Fleet Foxes jam session to calm her mind. Here, the actress gives us a 24-hour introduction to her world.
When I wake up around 5 a.m., I drink a glass of cold water. Then I get my workout done before the shoot.
Coffee is a must during filming. In the morning I drink coffee black, or if I go to an upscale coffee shop, a cappuccino. Breakfast depends: I have food delivered during filming.
"If I do Pilates in the morning, by the time I get to the afternoon, I've forgotten all about it and I wake up for the rest of the day.
I love using coconut oil for cleansing, but what I've noticed is that I tend to overdo it. If I have a long shoot the day before, I'll use something like a balm because eye makeup is brutal. I don't want to wash my makeup off the night before only to wake up the next day with panda eyes.
If my skin is particularly dry, I always go straight to Noble Panacea's Brilliant Prime Radiance Serum (opens in new tab). It has the perfect consistency to moisturize but not overpower the skin. If I exercise after putting something heavier on my skin, my T-zone can get clogged easily. After that, I use Radiance Resilience Moisturizer (opens in new tab). I love the texture of this product. It's easy to do in the car if I'm in a hurry in the morning, and the daily usage is listed so I don't have to wonder if I need to use it sparingly. In the winter I use more eye cream.
I usually wash my hair and leave it wet after my morning workout. I'm terrible. I guarantee you that my driver, Sam, sees me walk out the door with a wet head every day. So when he sees me after my efforts, he says, "Oh my, you look different." When I go out for the weekend, I use salt spray or a very nice leave-in conditioner from Kevin Murphy (opens in new tab) to give my hair some wave. I always leave getting ready until the last minute.
Right now I'm shooting "Killing Eve" in London, so I'll get my makeup done [on set]. But for my routine, Burberry and Hourglass (opens in new tab) foundations are great. You can choose how much coverage you want, I like sheer and dewy, and MAC's Clear Gel (opens in new tab) is probably the most heavy-duty I've found. I like my brows to stay in place. When I'm running around all over the place, I'll opt for a creamy lip that I can apply to my cheeks, like Burberry's Lip Color (opens in new tab). And I love a good eyebrow curler: Kevyn Aucoin's (opens in new tab) eyebrow curler is the best.
I'm about to start filming my last two episodes. Feeling all the feels. I'm really sad about the end result. I've always relied on the comfort of, "Oh, I get to see these people again next year, I get to play with them for another five months," so I'm sad that we won't all be together in this space again. But I am also content. I mean, the saying can be thrown around everywhere, but all good things come to an end. Right now, I am happy to focus on having a satisfying and fulfilling ending for the audience and for those who are creating it. I think there is always a danger of letting things run their course. So hopefully, I will be brave enough to make the choice.
Felicity Jones is overwhelming. Whenever I see her on the red carpet or promoting something, I always think she is so beautiful. [Her look] is always so effortless and simple. I also like the French sense of beauty: very rustic and simple, and I think that's where the real strength lies. I think back to when I was younger, how much makeup I wore, how much money I spent on makeup. But now I know that having healthy skin is the most comfortable thing for me. I just apply moisturizing cream and comb my eyebrows. That way I feel most comfortable with myself.
I love homeoplasmin (opens in new tab). It's basically a Vaseline kind of balm that you can put on any part of your skin when it's dry. I have very dry elbows, so I put it on my elbows, my lips, and my eyelids for a shiny eye area. Many TV and movie makeup artists use it in their kits.
Music is a big thing for me when I go home, especially when I'm filming or spending a lot of time alone. I mean, I like my alone time, but sometimes I feel like I'm just drifting through space. When that happens, I make a nice dinner and put on some mellow tunes, like the new Fleet Foxes album or a song by a band called Rhye. It's therapeutic.
Taking a hot bath with bath salts, listening to music, and lighting a good candle is my way to unwind after a long day. Irapothecary has an amethyst soak (opens in new tab) that smells like a spa. I've become more aware of self-care and why it's important to take time out of my day to take care of myself.
My favorite before bed is Noble Panacea's Brilliant Overnight Charge Cream (opens in new tab). When I use it, I wake up feeling radiant, hydrated, and ready to take on the day. The nightly application contains a lot of product so I can rub it into my neck and chest. That's something I'm really conscious of: I think we always focus on the face, but I try to remember not to end up with the jawline. I'm by no means an expert on lymphatic drainage or anything like that, but taking the time to massage the face and move the face a little bit helps. We are all so focused on being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy, being healthy. and living a life that is very focused on being healthy.
I should go to bed earlier; I go to bed around 10:30 or 11:00. Because the thought of being late gives me the worst anxiety. Then I spray on Irapothecary's "Beat the Blues Room Spray" (opens in new tab) and it smells just heavenly.
I'm also trying to get into the habit of writing down a couple of things that happened during the day, though I'm not going to pretend that it doesn't, because I know there will be some Instagram scrolling. I was talking to my stylist, Elizabeth Saltzman, about my press work, and she asked me, "What are some funny anecdotes from the shoot?" I get asked questions like that a lot. I always say, "Oh, it was so long ago, I don't remember. And I feel like I'm letting people down. But she says, "Just write some things down. Then you can always remember something. So I'm trying to do that a little bit at a time. Hopefully it works.
