King Charles pays tribute to Jimmy Carter and recalls the late president's 1977 visit to the United Kingdom

King Charles shared a personal tribute to President Jimmy Carter, who died on Sunday, December 29 at the age of 100, via The Independent.

Prince Charles shared the tribute on his Instagram Stories, captioning X's post, “Message of condolence from the King to President Biden and the American people on the passing of former US President Jimmy Carter.”

Prince Charles' message read, “It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing of former President Carter. He was a dedicated public servant and devoted his life to promoting peace and human rights. His dedication and humility were an inspiration to many and I remember with great fondness his visit to the United Kingdom in 1977.” The King continued, “My thoughts and prayers are with President Carter's family and the American people.”

Carter visited the UK in 1977 and was invited to Buckingham Palace by Queen Elizabeth. Because of his fondness for Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, Carter visited Wales five times after his presidency and seemed to have an affinity for the country, the BBC noted.

President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden issued a statement on Carter's passing. They said, “With compassion and moral clarity, he worked to eradicate disease, build peace, advance civil and human rights, promote free and fair elections, accommodate the homeless, and always advocate for the least among us. He saved, lifted, and changed lives all over the world.” [He was a man of great character, courage, hope and optimism. We will always cherish the image of him and Rosalyn together. The love shared between Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter is the definition of partnership, and their humble leadership is the definition of patriotism.”
