Sydney Sweeney Styles Kate Middleton's Favorite Sweater Trend with $2,500 Designer Bag

For decades, the Fair Isle sweater has been the mascot of the rich après-ski crowd who vacation in Chloe snow boots in the Vale. Fair Isle sweaters are generally considered a preppy staple and are often shunned by those who prefer the alternative. But Sydney Sweeney, a well-known Fair Isle aficionado, has done the impossible, turning a bourgeois, Kate Middleton-esque favorite into an edgy, cool style.

Grabbing an oversized ivory-colored knit, Sweeney paired the luxurious knit purchased from Celine with frayed jeans and an '80s leather jacket. Fair Isle knits are usually associated with barn jackets and cashmere scarves, but Sweeney chose black leather to give the sweater an edge. [It's a boxy Miu Miu design favored by Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner. Finished off with classic Wayfarer sunglasses, her outfit looked more like something she would wear on the back of a motorcycle rather than on the ski slopes.

It was a fair-isle week for Sweeney, who was photographed with her fiancé, Jonathan Davino, in New York City on December 15. Naturally, she embodied the classy metropolitan vibe that New York is known for.

With leather detailing, she paired a camel-colored Gucci sweater with dark chocolate pants. Although soft in color, Sweeney's pants created the same effect as the tough-girl leather jacket.

Even before Sweeney's double endorsement, the Fair Isle sweater had many fans. From Princess Diana and Kate Middleton to the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) in 1921, this festive print has been a favorite of the Royal Family for over a century.

More recently, Hailey Bieber styled her own camel version in 2023 with a pleated miniskirt. And this year, the Fashion Week guest paired it with denim and micro shorts. In short, Sweeney is the latest advocate for a thoroughly modern makeover of this sweater.
