Zendaya's Controversial Boots Trend at Nordstrom Run with Tom Holland Proves It's Actually Wearable

Zendaya and Tom Holland gave us another early Christmas gift of unexpected encounters and styling tips: they took their couple's coordinated wardrobe and their dog, Noon Coleman, to Topanga Mall Nordstrom on December 17. They went out. There's no way to know what they picked up walking through the fragrance department, but it's suddenly clear from their photos how they styled one of fashion's most controversial boot trends: the Maison Margiela footwear.

These ripped-toed shoes, available in flats, pumps, and Zendaya-like ankle boots, have been a niche fashion hit since they first debuted at Margiela in 1989. Martin Margiela wanted to bring the ergonomic advantages of this Japanese-origin style to the Western luxury market, and introduced a leather shoe with a large toe groove. Over the years, the hoofed shoe rose from an insider's favorite to one of the hottest items (a sure sign of a major trend) on Lyst's index.

Enter Zendaya, who owns the front row at Paris Fashion Week and knows how to style this boot trend in an everyday context, for example, a last-minute gift run at Nordstrom.

Zendaya paired her $1,420 boots with the simplest of outfit formulas: a white tank top and barrel-leg black jeans. She carried what appeared to be a Louis Vuitton bag in one hand and a Noon lead in the other. Tom Holland wore a gray polo sweater and black slacks. (Noon Coleman also wore a shiny black coat, which coincidentally fit the color story perfectly.)

Her outfit is a blueprint for a boot trend (or flats, or sandals) that is extreme, confusing, or downright hard to wear, but very accessible. The minimalist palette and simple shapes are in harmony with the crisp black leather of her boots. From this distance, her basement boots don't seem so controversial. At press time, it's not clear where she got her minimalist basics from, but being a shopping mall, we took the liberty of looking for similar items at Nordstrom.

Dating Tom Holland tends to bring out Zendaya's casual side, but she has found ways to mix up her experimental fashion. Earlier this month, while she was in Boston filming A24's The Drama, Z and T strolled around in mostly Reformation sweaters, On sneakers (Zendaya is an ambassador), and classic puffer jackets. A few days earlier, however, actress Zendaya supported her boyfriend in a custom-made burgundy Louis Vuitton dress made entirely of leather. Holland matched her in a burgundy T-shirt. In the summer, Zendaya showed her Shakespearean side by wearing a Vivienne Westwood dress to Holland's “Romeo and Juliet” premiere.

In a year of well-dressed couples like Taylor and Travis, Rihanna and Asap Rocky, and Selena and Benny, Zendaya and Tom Holland topped the list with their casually coordinated “fit” and mastery of the Z quirky shoe trend Z's mastery of the quirky shoe trend catapulted them to the top of the list. (See: the mesh flats she wore on vacation in Italy.) Now that we know the couple can wear any outfit they want, guess what was in their Nordstrom bag?
