Prince William and Princess Kate “treat their staff like family” at Christmas, says royal biographer

The workplace holiday party is usually filled with small talk and awkward Secret Santa exchanges. But if you're on Prince William and Princess Kate's staff, consider Christmas at work to be classified as “actually fun.”

Despite their busy vacation schedule, which includes a carol concert by the Princess of Wales, the King's Christmas lunch, and a large gathering at Sandringham, the Welsh couple take time out of their festive season to honor their staff.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey discusses the couple's Christmas work philosophy in his book, The Battle of the Brothers. In that book, he writes that Christian Jones, Prince William's private secretary, described how William and Kate were “paternalistic to their staff” (via the Sun).

“They imitate the Queen in that regard,” Lacey continued, “with their Christmas parties and Christmas gifts for their staff. They pride themselves on treating their staff like family.” [One might think that working for the royal family is a high-paying job, but in fact it is quite the opposite. Nevertheless, the Prince and Princess of Wales keeps that in mind for its staff, especially during the holiday season. Lacey added of William and Kate's strategy as supervisors, “They're really nice to them because they realize they're not well paid.”

Details of this year's KP Christmas party are unknown, but we do know that in 2017 it was held at the popular Notting Hill restaurant Beach Blanket Babylon. The Kensington Palace staff party also served as a reminder to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that their office, which had previously worked together as one office, was split.

In Harry & Meghan, a Netflix documentary about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, James Holt, now executive director of the Archwell Foundation but formerly with the Royal Foundation, said that everyone was “preparing for one big party and then right before the party it turned into two parties,” he recalls.

“In fact, that was the point at which we realized that these offices were separated,” he added.

Speaking of Christmas parties, it seems that Buckingham Palace employees went a bit wild after a recent holiday party. According to The Sun, about 50 employees headed to London's All Bar One after a reception at the palace and the event got “out of control.”

“A woman, believed to be a housemaid, punched the manager, broke a glass, and was arrested,” the magazine reported. A source further told The Sun, “I've never seen anyone go that crazy during a night out. She was on another level.”

Somehow, the party at Kensington Palace seemed to be on the more serene side.
