Taylor Swift Toasts 35th Birthday in Balmain Little Black Dress and $36,000 Diamond Earrings
Taylor Swift's 35th birthday dress and I'm like, “Reputation!” and Swifty not yelling “Reputation!” is stronger than I am.
Photos of the singer's lavish Kansas City birthday party finally hit the Internet on December 18, thanks to a photomontage by Swift's good friend and fellow Chiefs Brittany Mahomes. The party was something of a going-away LBD, a potential wink to the goth aesthetic on Swift's sixth album.
Photos show the two hugging and toasting Swift's birthday in front of a dimly lit bar, dressed in coordinated black and silver: Swift's in a $4,290 Balmain mini-dress styled by Joseph Cassel Falconer, sparkling like confetti birthday party nails. Meanwhile, Mahomes channeled her friend's Eras Tour outfit in a sparkly fringe jacket similar to the jacket from the “Karma” finale, and Chiefs WAG Linsday Ball wore a pink jacket from Lover CODE. Guests in subsequent images, including Ashley Avignone and Patrick Mahomes, also wore plenty of tassels, sequins, suits, and jewel tones. While the dress code may have been reminiscent of the '20s, as quoted by The Great Gatsby in Reputation's “This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things,” People reports that the birthday party was actually an Eras tour theme.
Swift wore a little black birthday dress with DeBeers diamond drop earrings that cost $36,000 according to the jeweler's website. (Her lavish luxury era, which began with a $54,000 Louis Vuitton watch and Gucci loafer pumps, seems to be continuing.) She also added what looks like a red Chiefs Friendship bracelet and peep-toe black pumps. Singer gracefully swept her hair into an updo similar to the French twist she tried at a recent football game. Her signature NARs lipstick completed the birthday girl's ensemble.
In additional photos, host Travis Kells wore a tuxedo that referenced his costume from his cameo appearance in “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” last summer on the Eras tour. The Chiefs' tight end reportedly planned a concert-themed birthday party as a surprise for the guest of honor.
An Instagram of Swift's special birthday party also featured a luscious bouquet of flowers, a lighted dance floor named after the Eras tour stage, and colorful cocktails. Not pictured: $175,000 worth of gifts allegedly purchased by Travis Kells for his girlfriend.
Taylor Swift usually shares an Instagram post highlighting her birthday plans, or is photographed by paparazzi celebrating, or both. Last year, she turned 34 in a Clio Pepia mini dress, surrounded by her pals in New York City. Fans mistakenly thought the LBD was a hint of the long-awaited Reputation re-recording, but it was actually the unofficial first outfit of her tortured poet department fashion era.
Her 35th birthday look was called . Lady for It? Balmain's strong shoulders and exaggerated embellishments fit well with the armor Swift figuratively wears in her Reputation lyrics. Also, the winding silver floral tendrils on the front of her party dress recall the lyrics of “Call It What You Want” (flowers grow as thorns).
As a designer in Swift's repertoire, Balmain is another interesting choice. She recently gravitated to a Vivienne Westwood corset, Miu Miu tartan, and Versace skirt suit, all paired with gold necklaces. The last time Swift wore Balmain was at the London premiere of Beyoncé's concert film “Renaissance” in 2023. At that time, she chose a metallic silver disco ball-style gown to fulfill Queen Bey's dress code.
Perhaps this birthday look was just a hint of what was on the playlist for Taylor's 35th anniversary party, and the real Reputation (TV) outfit was saved for another event. In any case, I'm waiting for Swift to confirm exactly what era of her own she was referring to for her big day.
