Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande Chanel the Method Dress trend with universal winter accessories
The Academy Women's Luncheon, hosted by Chanel each December, does not award Oscars for personal style. But when power lunch attendees (and Golden Globe nominees) Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande were seated side-by-side at the event on December 10, I thought they deserved a statue for their clever Chanel-style twist on the method dressing trend I thought they deserved a statue for their clever twist on the method dressing trend.
Gomez and Grande have spent the past few months promoting their immersive, award-winning musical project. The former is a Spanish-language epic, Emilia Perez, and the latter is an adaptation of Broadway's Wicked. The former is the Spanish-language epic “Emilia Perez” and the latter is an adaptation of Broadway's “Wicked.” Selena Gomez, along with stylist Erin Walsh, adopted the persona of a criminal widow with a penchant for dramatic silhouettes and slinky LBDs. Grande, on the other hand, worked with stylist Mimi Cattrell to create a bona fide witch in floaty tulle skirts and every shade of pink imaginable. Both stars have made their uniforms work for talk shows, step-and-repeats, premieres, and now even insider events where the dress code is Chanel from head to toe.
Selena Gomez continued her all-black look with a tweed jacket with contrasting white collar and cuffs and a black side-button skirt. She styled the set with a long business lunch-like bob, white platform sandal heels, and even translucent black tights.
Her cohorts also used the classic black tights, a universal winter accessory, to add contrast. Ariana Grande opted for a Glinda-like sparkling mini dress. Underneath, she wore pumps with secret pearls on the heels and carried a top-handled Chanel bag.
Among the powerful women of film and TV who gathered at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles was “Nobody Wants This” star Kristen Bell.
In a venue filled with double C logos and dainty hair bows, Selena Gomez and Ariana Grande's casual outfits still stood out. They made the runway's exclusive items feel like their own, showing off their special elevation of the all-time classic tights.
The duo, who will likely compete throughout the season for the Best Supporting Actress trophy, brought a cheering energy to the venue (and to their understated, coordinated looks).
Before the event ended, Selena Gomez delivered the keynote address, acknowledging her long road to recognition for her work in the film industry. She said, “I know firsthand how isolating this industry can be for you at times. If you ever feel alone at an event, come to me,” she said. In style and substance, she was not alone.
