All types of coats on the market today have their strengths, but nothing is as reliably stylish and rich as a humble top coat. Its simplistic and fuss design makes the wool coat virtually indestructible. On the other hand, its strong shoulders give the wearer a cool and androgynous look, which personally is very atmospheric.

They are a staple of every fashion editor's closet. (Mine is from H&M, just in case you were wondering. This season, celebrities also wear it in a big way. Elsa Hosk, for example, comes in a variety of colors, from charcoal gray to rich espresso brown. Jennifer Lawrence and Dakota Johnson are both avid fans and are generally all-black and favorite longline styles.

Katie Holmes boasts one of Hollywood's most impressive coat collections, so naturally, the actor owns quite a few.1 It covers the classics with a camel and butter yellow design, but also owns several statement coats, including a vibrant chartreuse version and an ankle-length brown checked style. But even with endless choices in her closet, Holmes is still partial to classic black.

Holmes has several noir styles with various cuts— one of which she wore earlier this week. Dawson's Creek Star was discovered in New York City on 11/11. 25 go and dressed in the ultimate mix of all the basics. She wore indigo-washed blue jeans, a graphic baseball cap and, of course, a double-breasted top coat.

The timeless look was what Holmes channeled through her fit. When it was time to make accessories, she chose such high favorites as Aviator sunglasses and streetwear sneakers classic: Nike Air Force1s. Holmes has dozens of sneakers in her arsenal, from ponies to new balance, but Nike's Eternal it sneakers have been the biggest shoe collector in fashion since their debut in the 1980s, and they've been a staple of everything from supermodels (like Naomi Campell) to sports stars who wore them first. And rose as something everyone likes.

Holmes' choice handbag was a taupe suede tote with belted details similar to Birkin. It touched the trend of wildly buzzing suede bags fresh off the runway.

So far, Holmes' fall looks have shown that she's taking a well-deserved break from her favorite 2 2,400 Khaite bags, given that she's been wearing everything but that style in recent weeks.

The real star of her outfit, however, is its rich-looking wool coat. When Holmes goes in and out of the theater for her performances in our town, it's the only piece that fans can really see - and obviously, it makes a modest impression. If you do not already have, consider this your sign to invest in a top coat (or two or three).
