The Outer Banks” Season 5: Everything We Know
Spoilers ahead for the conclusion of Outer Banks Season 4 Part 2 Since its debut in the dark days of April 2020, The Outer Banks has been Netflix's must-see adventure series about sun, surf, and amazingly rugged teen treasure hunters. For four seasons, fans have followed Pogue's John B., Sarah, JJ, Kiara, Pope and Cleo on thrilling treasure hunts, deadly escapes, twisted family drama and epic romance.
Season 4 Part 2, which premiered on Netflix on November 7, saw the group of friends face their toughest challenges to date and many series firsts. Now that Season 4 has come to a close, it's time to find out what adventures the OBX crew will have in the end. Read on for everything we know about Outer Banks Season 5 so far.
Outer Banks creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke confirmed that Season 5 will be the final season on November 4, 2024, just days before the premiere of Season 4 Part 2; the three confirmed in a written statement that they will be filming the summer 2017 episode “Blackout. Teenagers on the Beach at Dusk,” which was taken in the summer of 2017, inspired the creation of OBX as a five-season television series, they recalled. They continued, “From this beginning, we imagined a mystery that would lead us on a five-season journey of adventure, treasure hunting, and friendship.” [In Season 5, we hope to bring our beloved Porgs home in the way we imagined and planned all those years ago. “Season 5 will be our last season, and I think it will be our best one yet. We hope everyone will join us for another paddle to the surf break.”
John B actor Chase Stokes also shared a letter on his Instagram, offering a touching tribute to the series. 'It's with a heavy heart that I write this. It's my last ride. Thank you to everyone who has tuned in over the last five years. Thank you to everyone who has tuned in over the past five years. It will always be Pogues 4 Life.”
No word yet on when Season 5 of Outer Banks will be released. The best way to guess when the show will return is to map out the timeline of the series so far. Season 1 premiered on April 15, 2020, Season 2 premiered in July 2021, Season 3 premiered in February 2023, and the two-part Season 4 was released in October and November 2024. Given the show's release pattern and the fact that pre-production for Season 5 is already underway, it is highly likely that Season 6 will debut in early 2026.
OBX 4 will bring all of the remaining Porgs back to the screen, including Chase Stokes (John B.), Madeline Klein (Sarah Cameron), Madison Bailey (Chiara), Jonathan Davis (Pope), and Carasia Grant (Cleo) The film is being produced by the same company that produced the film. Drew Starkey is also likely to return as Rafe Cameron, a new Pogue ally, along with supporting actors Austin North (Topper) and Fiona Palomo (Sophia).
Despite our long-held theory that the OBX crew is immortal and that Sarah and JJ survived that big storm, season 4 ends with the tragic death of JJ (Rudy Pankow) at the hands of his own father Chandler Groff (J. Anthony Crane). In the Season 4 finale, during a standoff in Morocco, JJ gave Groff the season's treasure, the Blue Crown, as the bad guys held a gun to Chiara's head. But Groff fatally stabbed JJ anyway, leaving his son to die in Chiara's arms, and JJ's last words were to tell Chiara he loved her.
After JJ's brief memorial montage, Pogue seemed truly depressed, but Rafe, who had redeemed himself by helping Pogue throughout the second half of the season, drove up and told him that Groff was headed to Lisbon, Portugal, where he had found a buyer for the “blue crown”. The final shot of Season 4 shows an enraged Key declaring Pogues' “revenge.”
We can expect OBX Season 5 to be about the ramifications of JJ's death. Specifically, it will depict a period of revenge for Kiara (and the other Porgs, especially Kiara). Jonas Pate explained that “they may get the treasure as part of their revenge, but it's all to avenge JJ, to find comfort and peace, to move on from the grief they are feeling.”
Josh Pate added that Chiara will be “the lead in the groff hunt.” They feel obligated to avenge JJ. If they do not go after Groff, they will feel they have let down JJ's spirit and friendship. I think they all feel they have to do something. To ease the grief they are feeling.”
Meanwhile, in another major development, Sarah and John B. are pregnant. The longtime couple and Outer Banks OTP found out they were pregnant in episode 7 of season 4, and Sarah's actress Madeline Klein told Tudum, “At least by the end of the show, we knew all along it was what the writers wanted.”
Jonas Pate added that Sarah and John B.'s pregnancy “seemed like a natural evolution of the challenges they had to tackle.” Furthermore, even though JJ was no longer the baby's godfather, the rest of the Pogues (and Uncle Rafe, who had begun to reconcile with his sister) would be the village that would help raise the child.
