Kelsea Ballerini's 'Patterns' Tour Glam Hides Nod to New Album

If you were lucky enough to get tickets to Kelsea Ballerini's sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 29, you will have memorized every word of Patterns within four days of its release last week. I myself spent the evening singing cathartically through Ballerini's fifth studio album, “Patterns.”

Looking around the crowd, every attendee was clad in fringe, cowboy boots, or studs and glitter. Occasionally, some audience members wore merch from Ballerini hits like “Cowboys Cry Too” or DIY tributes to “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat.” But my biggest takeaway was that roughly one in five of the 19,000 attendees, regardless of hair texture or color, were trying to recreate Ballerini's signature beach waves.

With this in mind, it was no surprise that the CMT Award winner came on stage (sitting atop a pile of luggage) with a very signature hairstyle, named after the lyrics of one of her songs. Ballerini's longtime hairstylist and makeup artist, Kelsey Deenihan, told Marie Claire exclusively.

To create a look that balances the desired level of movement with enough hold to withstand jumping and running around on stage (Ballerini is an active mover and shaker), Deenihan “focused on using products that could withstand the energy of a live performance.” She lifted hair with Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Mousse, created soft textured waves with a 1-inch curling iron, and lightly sprayed Pantene Pro-V Flexible Hold Alcohol-Free Hairspray to create a tousled look.

Ballerini's makeup took a similar “fresh and approachable” approach, with impeccably long-lasting glitter eyes. (Seriously: seriously, I stared at her for an hour and a half and did not witness a single crease or fallout.) The price was only $11.99.

“We didn't want the gradient to be dark and heavy, we wanted it to be a warm, neutral color that would shine off the stage. We used Icy Frost, Sunrise Beam, Gold Dusk, Rose Copper, Dreamy Pink, and Golden Toffee clean color eyeshadow sticks,” says Deenihan.
