Celine's first red lipstick is your one and only - “Marie Claire” editors are the first to test it!
Last week, I felt like a Céline model without even approaching the runway, just applying lipstick. [Let me rewind back to February, when then-Creative Director Hedi Slimane presented Céline's Fall 2024 collection video. Models strutted down the hall of mirrors in 60s shift dresses and riding boots, with beauty secrets that could only be revealed in a post-collection press release: Twiggy-inspired mascara and bright lipstick from Céline's yet-to-be-released makeup collection. The lipsticks are from Céline's yet-to-be-unveiled makeup collection. The lipsticks will first appear in the fall, the brand said.
A few months later, Céline Beauté officially unveiled the Maison's debut, and so far only, daily lipstick, a cool-toned red called Rouge Trionf. For $75, the formula has a satin finish and is packaged in a faceted gold bullet. (or a monogrammed leather case attached to a gold chain, if you really want to splurge). The formula is 89% naturally derived, and the applicator is chicly stamped with the Céline logo; by January 2025, Céline plans to launch more mascaras, eyeliners, and blushes, from pale mauve pinks to chocolatey browns.
A single shade out of the gate is indeed a bold move. So with the permission of the Celine team, I secretly wore it everywhere from weekly meetings to the Victoria's Secret fashion show. But my one and only experience was not enough to prove the lasting power of this shade. So I enlisted three Marie Claire editors to try Celine's debut lipstick before anyone else. Read our honest reviews as we finally get to share the shades we wore all week long.
“I'm a sucker for beautiful packaging, so I immediately fell in love with the velvet carrying case and gold sheath that holds the bullets. The lipstick itself glides on as smooth as satin, which honestly surprised me. Very easy to apply. This red is not a color I would wear every day. I'm not a big fan of these colors, but I look forward to future releases. Celine, if you're reading, I'd love to get Plum or Oxblood; at $75, it's a splurge for sure, but perfect for real lipstick heads and beauty obsessives.”
“The first thing I noticed about this formula, aside from the deliciously fancy bullet case, is how much grip it has. I enjoy how the lipstick clings to my mouth instead of sliding all over the place. I like to use lipstick on my teeth and chin because I can trust that the lipstick won't end up on my teeth or chin within a couple of hours. And while I usually gravitate toward warmer reds with a hint of orange, I really enjoy the true red and bluish undertones of this Celine shade. I didn't need any additional makeup, as this juicy red lip was all I needed to feel put together and feminine. I do wish that some scent had been added to the cream itself, as it has a bit of a musty smell that I associate with my grandmother's cosmetics. But overall, for a true luxury, treat-yourself lipstick that you can't wait to apply, this is an exceptional option.”
“When I first heard I was going to try the $75 red lipstick, I immediately thought ‘luxury auntie shade’ and hoped it would be buttery smooth, since I am usually a lipgloss person. Of course, Celine was right. The packaging is sleek and durable, featuring a magnetic top (my favorite) and a suede carrying bag, perfect for on the go. The lipstick itself exceeded my expectations for a satin formula. It glides on smoothly and is incredibly moisturizing. The tip was just right for drawing a cupid's bow.
“Now, about the color: it's not my shade - too light for my caramel skin tone - but I'm looking for more shades to find my perfect match. Finally, as the cool kids say, Celine . I give this product an 8 because you ate it.” [0 points] [1 point] “Wearing red lipstick to work is indeed a bold choice, and not one I would normally make. (Most days I am Charlotte Tilbury's pillow talk girl.) But I knew that if I were going to try Celine's debut shade of longwear, a day filled with coffee breaks, deskside tee times, and chatter during meetings would be the perfect setting.
“My discovery: this satin-finish lipstick stays put after application. The cool undertone red really pops, like the lipstick equivalent of dopamine dressing; two coats provided even coverage and lasted most of the day. By mid-afternoon, I only needed a quick touch-up of Cupid's Bow. The results are at least enough to make me consider purchasing the $48 refill when I inevitably run out. Taylor Swift, I may have just found your red lipstick for the final stage of the Eras tour.
