Mandy Teefey insists daughter Selena Gomez “have her own umbrella” in the early days of her fame.

Mandy Teefey, recently honored as one of “The Moms” in Glamour's “Woman of the Year” series, spilled what it took to raise one of the most famous women in the world.

The mother and business partner of Selena Gomez recalled a time when she tried to instill firm values in her daughter despite her growing fame.

“That's one of my favorite stories,” Teefey explained. 'She was trying to get out of her trailer, and she had an umbrella, and they had an umbrella for her. She needs to learn how to put gas in her car. She needs to be human first.”

Tina Knowles was also honored in the feature (along with Donna Kells and Maggie Baird), and expressed similar sentiments about her daughters Beyonce and Solange Knowles.

“I'm proud to see what I've instilled in them, which is to care about people, to not be so self absorbed. [Look people in the eye, say hello, don't be a diva. That doesn't work here. That's what we have to teach our kids. People try to do everything for me, and sometimes they kiss my ass. I say, 'No, no, no, you're not helpless.' So I am most proud of them for being good people.”

Teefey is the CEO of Wondermind, a mental health platform he founded with Gomez, and Tina is the vice chairman of Beyonce's hair care brand Cécred. For this reason, along with Kells and Baird, they were honored by Glamour magazine in their own right and because of who their children are.
