Exclusive: Prince Harry Releases Previously Unseen Footage of His Visit to New York

The Duke of Sussex is giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at his visit to New York City during UN General Assembly High Level Week and Climate Week in a new video shared exclusively with Marie Claire on Friday, October 4.

Prince Harry, who turned 40 on September 15, has reiterated his commitment to focus on his work as a global charity advocate and politician in the new decade, and during his visit Prince Harry turned his attention to issues like climate change, mental health, and the dangers of social media.

In the video, Prince Harry said, “My lock screen is a picture of my children. What is your lock screen?” and addresses the Clinton Global Initiative on the challenges parents face in today's increasingly digital world. The new Parents' Network, which the Duke of Sussex launched with his wife Meghan Markle, was recently launched as a resource for families whose children have been harmed by online interactions.

The prince exchanged hugs and handshakes in the video as he gave his speech, but also found time to sneak a FaceTime call backstage with the Duchess of Sussex and her children Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3.

The Duke of Sussex also honored his mother with an impassioned speech at an event for the demining charity HALO Trust. He said, “As you know, the work of the HALO Trust in Angola meant a great deal to my mother. Continuing my mother's legacy is a responsibility that I take incredibly seriously,” he told the audience.

A father of two, he said, “You don't need children to be involved in the future of the planet, but my mother would have been horrified to know whose children and grandchildren would be living in a world still infested with landmines.”

During a panel discussion at African Parks, Prince Harry, who is working this week in Lesotho and South Africa in connection with his youth charity, Sentebale, to ensure that these African habitats remain protected for generations to come, discussed wildlife conservation and He spoke about the importance of sustainable tourism.

At a related meeting prior to his trip to Centebale, Prince Harry teamed up with Her Majesty Queen Massenate Mohato Siso of Lesotho at a UN gathering. The two, along with the First Ladies of Botswana and Finland, focused on issues such as ending gender-based violence.

The Duke of Sussex concluded his visit by celebrating the fifth anniversary of the founding of Travalyst, his nonprofit organization on sustainable travel. Citing serious statistics on climate change and the surge in international travel, Prince Harry called on both travelers and global leaders to focus on both sustainability and profitability.

“This kind of growth is only sustainable if we prioritize people and places, not just profits,” Prince Harry said in his speech, adding that “as a father of two,” he found the issue of climate change “utterly frightening.”

Away from New York, the Duke of Sussex had a busy month, honoring seriously ill children at the Well Child Awards in London and continuing his commitment as the charity's longtime patron.
