'Heart Stopper' Season 4: Everything We Know

Rom-com fans rejoice: Netflix's rom-com series “Heartstopper” is back. Created by Alice Osman and based on her LGBTQ+ book of the same name, the beloved teen series returns for its third season on October 3, 2024, bringing the love story of Charlie Spring (Joe Rock) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) to the screen! While season three was full of the dreamlike charm that made millions of viewers fall in love with the show's ensemble cast, it also explored serious real-world issues such as mental health, eating disorders, and first sexual experiences, as well as a nuanced look at asexuality and aromanticism. Add to that a cameo appearance by Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (aka actor Jonathan Bailey) himself, and you have a truly unmissable piece of TV.

Although the series has only just begun, countless fans have already watched the eight new episodes, and many are eagerly awaiting news of the next season. Here is everything we know so far about a possible “Heartstopper” Season 4.

Unfortunately, Netflix has said nothing about the future of “Heartstopper” as of the season 3 premiere. The streaming giant usually announces renewals after seeing a few weeks of viewership. But early praise from critics and the fact that Season 3 is already being loved by social media means there could be good news in the near future.

As for when to expect news, Netflix announced “Heartstopper” Seasons 2 and 3 in May 2022, just one month after Season 1 debuted. Hopefully, a decision on Season 4 will come out as early as November.

The timing of Season 4 depends on how quickly Netflix announces renewals, but we can get an idea by looking at previous Heartstopper releases. Season 1 debuted in April 2022, Season 2 in August 2023, and Season 3 returned in October 2024. If all goes according to plan, Season 4 will be released around early 2026 (with any luck, around Christmas 2025).

Joe Locke (Charlie), Kit Connor (Nick), Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), Corina Brown (Tara), Kizzie Edgell (Darcy), Toby Donovan (Isaac), Leah Norwood (Imogen) The entire main cast of the show is expected to return, including Jenny Walzer (Tori), Cormac Hyde-Collin (Harry), and Darragh Hand (Michael).

Season 3 saw a major cast shakeup, with Olivia Colman unable to reprise her role as Nick's mother Sarah due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel's own Hayley Atwell was able to appear in a popular scene in the books as Nick's aunt, and hopefully Colman will be able to return for Season 4 (and maybe share a scene with Atwell).

Spoilers ahead for the conclusion of “Heartstopper” season 3. The first three seasons of “Heartstopper” were adapted from the popular series that creator Alice Orsman turned from a webcomic into a graphic novel. The series has published five graphic novels so far, with Netflix drawing inspiration from volumes one through three for seasons one and two. Season 3, on the other hand, follows volumes 4 and 5.

Osman announced the sixth and final volume in April 2023, and the webcomic resumed online on October 1, 2024, in time for the season 3 premiere. In other words, the show still has a lot of material to tell.

In a September 2024 interview with The Guardian, she shared her thoughts on ending the series she started nearly a decade ago.

“I've only read 50 pages, but I know everything about what's going to happen and what the dialogue is going to be. 'I'm really excited about what's going to happen at the end of the story, but it's also very bittersweet. But it's also very bittersweet. It's very sad, but it's the right time.”

According to J-14, the writer and illustrator plans to release the sixth volume of the Netflix series prior to the fourth and possibly final season.

“Even though it hasn't been renewed, I will most likely be writing the script for season 4 and drawing volume 6 at the same time,” she wrote in her Patreon. And another thing we have to keep in mind is that we need to get the six-volume book out before Season 4 comes out. So now the timer is counting down.”

As for possible plots, Season 4 will probably deal with the show's lingering questions about Charlie and Nick's relationship as they come to the end of their high school (or, in British parlance, college) lives. In the Season 3 finale, Nick takes a road trip to visit colleges and falls in love with the Leeds School in London, four hours away from his hometown. Nick seems hesitant about long-distance relationships, so he may have a troubling (and tear-jerking) conversation with Charlie in Season 4.
