Prince Harry calls for replacing the term “mental health” with a new phrase during his visit to New York

Prince Harry began his solo visit to New York City on Monday, September 23 by attending the 14th annual Concordia Global Summit. The Prince attended the session, paying tribute to the “activist army” in the audience and suggesting words to be used instead of “mental health.”

The Duke of Sussex, along with Dr. Tessie Ojo, CBE, CEO of the Diana Award, spoke at the session, “The Global Mental Health Crisis Among Young People. The Diana Award will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024 and aims to develop future leaders with the late Princess Diana as inspiration.

Introducing the prince, Dr. Oshiro said (via The Telegraph), “He actually told me when we walked in that, in fact, we should no longer be talking about mental health, but about mental fitness.” He continued, “His dedication to this cause reinforces our mission.”

Prince Harry spoke at length about the importance of the activity at the event.

“Certainly one of the solutions here is for the government to implement, or at least find young people like yourselves and get them into decision-making and policy-making before the problem exists,” the Duke of Sussex told the crowd. [But there is no doubt that getting young people involved from the very beginning will make a difference. And why wouldn't it?” the prince asked.

Harry also paid tribute to the winners of the Diana Legacy Award: Christina Williams of Jamaica and Kiara Liyanti Hutapea Chan of Indonesia.

“I applaud you all for being able to stand on this stage at this age, be confident, and speak as clearly and passionately as you do,” he told the awardees.

Prince Harry also referred to his late mother, Princess Diana, saying, “I know my mother would be incredibly proud of you ...... The way you guys do things, the activism, the compassion, those two things are very true to how my mother lived her life and what she believed in.”
