Appearing on the SheMD podcast with Mary Alice Haney and Dr. Tice Aliabadi, the actress discussed her new show Three Women, adapted from Lisa Tadeo's novel of the same name.
Since sexuality is a major theme in the show, the podcast host asked Woodley herself.
She began by explaining that she has a problem with the way America approaches sexuality, as opposed to Europe, where she lived for a time. For her, America sells sex as “made” and “performance” as opposed to “true intimacy, vulnerability, and connection.”
“I'm a very sexual person. I always have been. And in my life of discovering myself and my body, I was very lucky to have a partner at the time who loved to dance. I always call it dancing [sometimes it's a really fast tango, sometimes it's a really slow groove, sometimes it's loud, sometimes it's really soft. And I had someone who helped me discover myself because I felt comfortable with him. And I think I probably did the same with him.”
The star of “Big Little Lies” expressed a desire to change the way sexuality is taught.
“In a way, sometimes I wish I could teach sex education,” she said. [Not me personally, but I'd like to be able to go into the sexuality education curriculum and say, 'Okay, how can we fix this and change it a little bit? [If people knew the possibilities of sex, they would look at pornography and say, 'Oh, this is like junk food. I'm like a magic machine, I can do everything else with my body, and this is what we're being sold? ' [Pleasure is so important, and we're just fighting for it, and we don't even know what's possible, and my big complaint about porn is, 'You're selling everyone McDonald's.' It's like, 'You're selling McDonald's to everyone.
“Three Women” is out now on Starz and Hulu and also stars Betty Gilpin, Gabrielle Creevy, and DeWanda Wise.
