The Duke of Sussex attended the One805Live Fall Concert in Carpinteria, CA on Friday, September 20, to honor Santa Barbara County air support pilot Lauren Courtney. The event, hosted by legendary actor Kevin Costner, was intended to raise funds for Santa Barbara County first responders.
“As you've probably heard by now, I've been in the military for 22 years, over 10,000 hours, always flying helicopters, so I rarely see my family,” Prince Harry said after taking the charity stage to honor the first responder of the night, He said.
“Prince Harry came on stage at the charity and asked, ‘Why are you still doing what you do?’
According to People, the first responder explained that he loves his job and considers his service career a “rewarding experience.”
“It's rewarding every time I'm on call, whether it's putting out a fire, rescuing someone in the backcountry, providing medical transport from a car accident, doing law patrol, or keeping the public safe,” Courtney said.
The event featured Pink and Dallas Green, who reunited as the duo You and Me, as well as Kenny Loggins, Joe Bonamassa, Alan Parsons, Al Stewart, Richard Marx, and many other celebrities.
According to People, Markle attended the event with her husband last year, but was notably absent from this year's festivities. According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex had to be absent due to an undisclosed illness.
Despite Markle's absence, Prince Harry shared a memorable and emotional moment on stage with Courtney.
According to People, the pilot then “recalled an experience he had while working search and rescue in Colorado, when he helped rescue a group of skiers who had fallen down a 30-foot embankment.” Courtney explained that it took five attempts to save one gentleman in particular, who had a serious head injury.
“In the military, we learned that you don't leave anyone behind. We rescued him. He spent almost a year in intensive care, then rehabilitated, and now he can walk, and he's married. He actually went to the top of the Grand Teton and proposed to his girlfriend after the accident,” Courtney added.
“You are one of many heroes here tonight,” Prince Harry replied. 'There are people here tonight who are alive because of you, who are back with their families because of you ...... From all of us here, thank you so much.”
