Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford's 1993 Academy Awards Blowout on Hot Rollers
If you are Cindy Crawford and Kaia Gerber, then mother-figure and daughter-figure take on a literal meaning.
The two are almost doppelgangers in their everyday lives. Give them the same hairstyle and the resemblance reaches a whole new level, which is exactly what happened at the premiere of “Shell” at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12. For the red carpet event, Garber drew inspiration from Crawford's appearance at the 1993 Academy Awards - down to the white bandage dress and voluminous blowout, hairstylist Clayton Hawkins told Marie Claire exclusively She tells Marie Claire exclusively.
“I certainly wanted to pay homage to Cindy's classic blowout,” Hawkins tells us. 'There's a reason that style is iconic. This particular hairstyle didn't just mimic Crawford's bouncy curls and crown volume. Hawkins adds, “I'm a millennial, so I've always liked the side part, but in general, I don't think people are as rigid when it comes to parting their hair one particular way.”
To achieve such dramatic height (Gerber's hair is estimated to have 2 inches of lift), Hawkins had to prepare several non-standard items in his kit. Says Hawkins, “I needed a jumbo 2-inch curling iron (which is important) and hot rollers.” Once the hair was set, cooled, and brushed, Hawkins sprayed Gerber's hair liberally with Sexy Hair Volume and Texture Spray.
The founder of Library Science never stopped playing with hairstyles; she even copied her mother's makeup at the 1993 Academy Awards. Makeup artist Dana Delaney, who also works with Laura Harrier and Ayo Edebiri, gave Gerber a mauve lip and slightly smoky brown eye shadow. Although the inspiration is 30 years old, both of these colors are proving to be major makeup trends for fall 2024.
