Why Prince Harry was frequently called “Henry” by the late Princess Diana

In honor of his 40th birthday, royal pundits are reminiscing about his younger days when Prince Harry was known to cause a bit of trouble, resulting in his mother, the late Princess Diana, calling him “Henry.”

As Harry Howard of the Daily Mail recalled in a recent column, the Duke of Sussex was named Prince Henry Charles Albert David by the Archbishop of Canterbury in December 1984.

Despite Henry being his official “real name,” Princess Diana and then-Prince Charles reportedly “made it clear very early on that their newborn son would be called Harry.”

That did not stop Prince Harry's mother, Princess Diana, from calling the young prince “Henry” when he got into a little trouble.

“Former police bodyguard Ken Whorf recalls hearing Diana scolding Harry on a regular basis: ‘Henry, no!’”

[11 Howard adds that the current Prince Charles “once revealed” that Prince Harry was called by his formal name when he was “very, very naughty.”

A writer for the Daily Mail detailed several instances in which Prince Harry was somewhat of a troublemaker in his childhood, including when the young prince “tricked family chef Darren McGrady into making pizza for dinner instead of roast chicken, faking his nanny's handwriting He reportedly “did so.

“Harry also famously stuck his tongue out at photographers from the back seat of the family car after being taken to see newborn Princess Beatrice in 1988,” Howard reported. When Harry was five or six years old, after wandering around the grounds of Kensington Palace, he used a police radio given to him by Inspector Waugh and said from nearby Kensington High Street, 'I'm outside Tower Records'”.

In 1997, when Prince Harry was only 12 years old, his mother, Princess Diana, tragically lost her life in a car accident in Paris. In his memoir, Spare, Prince Harry reveals his biggest “regret” about his mother: “She was a very young girl.”

“I was deeply saddened by her death.

“I wanted to dig deep and tell my mother all the regrets that were weighing on my mind, especially the last time we spoke on the phone,” Prince Harry wrote.

“My mother called me the evening of the day of the accident, but I was running around with Willie and my cousins and didn't want to stop playing.

“So I was short with her. I was so eager to get back in the game that I rushed my mom off the phone. I wanted to apologize.” I wanted to find the words to express how much I loved her.
