'The Bear's' Liza Colón-Zayas Urges Latinas to “Keep Believing and Voting” at First Emmy Awards

Bear actress Liza Colon-Sayas made an important call while making history at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

Puerto Rican actress Colon-Zayas won this year's award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming the first Latina actress to win the category after her fan-favorite role as Tina in season 2 of “The Bear.” Colón-Zayas, wearing a sparkling emerald green gown, opened her speech by giving a shout-out to her husband, David Zayas, who also played her on-screen spouse in “The Bear” Season 3.

“I want to thank my husband, David Zayas. He told me to write a speech but I didn't because I didn't think I could,” the star said before honoring the other actresses nominated in the category. 'Meryl Streep, Carol Burnett, Janelle (James), Cheryl Lee Ralph, Hannah (Einbinder). I love you all.”

The actress, who plays chef Tina Marrero in the FX on Hulu comedy, then thanked and paid tribute to the women in her life and the Bear cast and crew. 'I admire you from the bottom of my heart. My family, my grandchildren, thank you. And thank you to my beautiful cast. Chris Stoller, Joanna (Caro), thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me a new life on this show."

She concluded her speech with a message to her fellow Latina women who look up to her. She said, “And to all the Latinas who are watching me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights.” [At that moment, the audience erupted in applause and a heartwarming cheer from fellow pioneering actress Sofia Vergara.

Colon-Zayas, along with Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Backlash, won the award for the second season of The Bear. The FX comedy received 23 nominations this year, surpassing the record set by “30 Rock” for the most Emmy nominations in history.
