The Perfect Couple” Ending Commentary: Who Killed Merritt?
This story contains serious spoilers for all six episodes of The Perfect Couple. Currently, there is a subgenre of murder mysteries that feature a character who dies surrounded by millionaires. Since “Big Little Lies” became a smash hit, several must-see TV shows like “The Undoing” and “The White Lotus” have been produced, followed by many predictable and easy-to-miss titles Netflix's latest, “The Perfect Couple,” became available for streaming on September 5, 2024.
Based on the novel of the same name by Erin Hilderbrand, the show follows a formula that many will recognize, and is directed by Susanne Bier, director of The Undoing and The White Lotus (...) The film is also notable for its cast of “The Undoing” and “The White Lotus” alumni. Starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber as the patriarch and matriarch of the Wimberly family, an elite WASP family living on Nantucket Island. In particular, renowned author Greer Garrison Wimberly (Kidman) is opposed to her son's marriage to working-class zoologist Amelia (Eve Hewson). As the series unfolds, we see flashbacks to Benji and Amelia's engagement and wedding over the past year and learn of Merritt and Tag's secret relationship. Then, before the wedding, Merritt tells Tag that she is pregnant.
Merritt also tells Amelia (who is not so innocent herself throughout the show, as she is having an affair with her fiancé's friend Shooter) and they argue. On the eve of the wedding, Merritt also has a heated discussion with Tag about the pregnancy and wants him to leave his wife. Shortly after Tag leaves Merritt on the beach, she breezily says “Hello” to the approaching figure (presumably the killer).
By the end of the finale, the investigators discover that Thomas' wife, Abby, pregnant and obsessed with wealth and status, murdered Merritt. Abbey is the killer and wanted to eliminate Merritt because of how the Winberry family trust fund is set up for her husband, the Winberrys, who would be entering her. The trust fund is planned to go to all three Winberry sons when the youngest, Will, turns 18, and his birthday is just a few weeks away in the series. Merritt's murder may have been solved, but it remains a mystery why this scene opened all six episodes and graced the finale. (Perhaps it's time for the subgenre of rich people doing bad things to take a breather.)
