Big hair trends for fall inspired by Paris and Copenhagen
Summer hairstyles are fairly predictable, with anything to keep hair off the neck in the humid heat. Take, for example, the trend for updos at Paris Couture Week in June and maximalist hair accessories at Copenhagen Fashion Week in August: updos were the trend at Paris Couture Week in June, and maximalist hair accessories were the trend at Copenhagen Fashion Week in August. But as New York Fashion Week approaches, fall's biggest hair trends are stepping into the limelight.
In fact, they are already (casually) becoming known. Kaia Gerber and Jenna Ortega debuted curtain bangs in recent weeks. (Rachel Zegler and Emma Stone have ribbons on the back of their heads. And “Rich Girl Blonde,” a shade with dark roots and buttery ends, has appeared on everyone from Lindsay Hubbard to Rihanna.
“The hair trend for fall is simple, sleek, sexy, and easy to care for,” says celebrity hairstylist Julius Michael. Effortless glamour is exactly what every cut, color, and style has in common this season. Glowouts are easy, cuts are air-dried, and styling takes less than 20 minutes.
Scroll ahead to get a full breakdown of the biggest fall hair trends that are about to take over your TikTok FYP, NYFW street style, and the red carpet. Michael, along with celebrity hairstylists Marc Mena, Laura Porco, and Mara Roszak, share the best fall hair looks on their radar.
The bob isn't just for fall, it's one of the biggest hair trends for 2024. Madeline Klein, Lily Collins, Jessica Biel, Joey King, Gigi Hadid, Zendaya, and Penelope Cruz are just a few stars who made the big chop. Generally, these bobs are less blunt and more easy, breezy styles. Undulating layers follow the body, and slight textures accentuate the style. Says Mena, “Color, cut, and length should create the conditions for a seamless transition from late summer to fall and into winter.” Adds Porco, “It's really cute, really French.” The finishing touch can be a curtain of fluttering bangs.
As Michael says, “sexy shaggy” is going to gain momentum this season. While shorter shaggy styles, from broccoli cuts to pixie hairstyles, were popular in the summer, length and layers will be in vogue for fall. Says Mena, “It has the versatility to be edgy or understated.” This cut is perfect for those who want to go full-on shaggy but aren't quite ready to take the plunge.”
The 90s blowout is still going strong. For the time being, “put down the curling iron and use velcro or hot rollers to add volume and bounce,” Mena says. Layered hair is the ideal backdrop for a bouncy blowout, but it also requires the right styling products. Says Porco, “Use John Frieda's Frieze Dream Curl Reviver Mousse for volume without the stickiness.”
Bright blondes are the way of summer, but this fall, honey colors in more muted shades will be on trend. Says Michael, “We love bright blondes, but now it's time to go back to dark roots and buttery ends.” 'Baby light highlights throughout and toning down just at the roots will keep hair looking natural and sun-kissed.' The soft blonde color has a champagne undertone and looks great on all ages, hair types, styles, and lengths.
“The cool tones of ash brown are over, and the warmer tones of caramel are the norm,” says Michael. Mix that with a little honey and you've got yourself a sexy brunette for fall.” If you need an exciting photo to show your stylist, screenshot Halle Berry, Jessica Alba, Mila Kunis, etc.
The cowboy copper and cherry cola red hair trends peaked in popularity last year. See Dua Lipa, Riley Keo, and Shay Mitchell. While these fiery shades aren't going anywhere, expect more subdued red undertones to permeate the balayage of stretchy blondes and brunettes. According to Porco, strawberry blonde is making a bit of a comeback.
The very Lana Del Rey aesthetic, a retro vamp reminiscent of the 60s, is back. If you have bangs, bobby pin them up to create volume on the top of your head. You'll need a tease brush and some hairspray. Finish it off with a glamorous bow or a catsuit with bijoux. The look will begin in fall 2024 and continue through winter and into the holiday season.”
Balletcore continues to be a focus this season. Ribbons are still the focus, but the world of cute hair accessories is expanding. The supersized scrunchies, ponytail cuffs, and headbands that swept the streets of Copenhagen have made their way to the US and will remain so for the foreseeable future. 'You need a headband or a ribbon. Tie your hair up or let it down. But put away the clips and embrace this trend,” Michael says. On the plus side, the hairstyles don't require much styling.
“In general, there's more of a French look,” says Porco. 'It's very sleek overall.' Upstyles are especially popular. Braided chignons and buns secured with clear elastics or bobby pins are the way to go. The hair trend for fall is simple, sophisticated, and sexy. Michael says, “Take some hair gel and work it through your hair from roots to ends, then brush it into a bun or braid.” 'It's a quick, simple, elegant hairstyle for running with friends, a date with your significant other, or wedding guests.'
