Are Alan Takahashi and Kazuto Kasahara of "Boyfriend" still in a relationship?
Spoilers ahead for all episodes of "The Boyfriend"; Netflix's Japanese LGBTQ reality show "The Boyfriend" concluded on July 30, leaving two couples to decide whether to continue their relationship while returning to the real world. One of those couples, extroverted IT worker Alan Takahashi and taciturn chef Kasahara Kazuto, was an unlikely pair, and despite the difficulties, their sweet slow-burn romance has left fans anxious to find out if they have officially hooked up since leaving the green room. Read on to find out everything we know about Alan and Kazuto's relationship, including hints as to whether they're still dating after the shoot.
Kazuto, a 27-year-old chef, made a fascinating appearance on the guys' first night in the green room. Instead of arriving earlier in the day with the rest of the cast, he arrived in the early afternoon with fresh fish for a sashimi dinner. Although some of the men were interested in Kazuto from the start (especially the go-go dancer Usak), the chef did not spend much time in the green room during the early episodes of Boyfriend. Instead, he had to leave frequently for work. This was because the cast of the series could not completely interrupt their lives for a few weeks of filming.
Meanwhile, Alan, a 29-year-old Japanese-Brazilian IT worker, came to the green room for the third episode. It turns out that he had a past relationship with another cast member, college student Dai Nakai, but the two remained friends on the show. Instead, Alan made his interest in Kazuto Usaku known to all the guys, and model Ryota (and eventual late addition Ikuo) was also a fan of the chef. While running a coffee cart with Shun in episode 4, Kazuto revealed that he already had a crush on one of the men in the house. That night, Kazuto texted Alan and invited him to talk when he got home, and the two revealed their mutual interest before hugging.
On their first sleepover date of the season in episode 5, Kazuto and Alan chose each other. Alan shared that he was born in Brazil but grew up struggling in Japan with his mother and sister. Kazuto was impressed by Alan's caring nature, and Alan said he fell in love at first sight. However, Alan was more outgoing and flirted heavily during their hot spring trip; they shared an intimate massage, but Kazuto was used to taking things slowly and later admitted
that he was a bit overwhelmed during their date.
At the picnic in episode 6, Kazuto told Alan that he considered him only a friend at that point, but did not completely break off the relationship. Kazuto spent time getting to know the other men in the group, but he turned them down softly and told Usaku, Ikuo, and Ryota that he saw them only as friends. On the last private date of the program, Kazuto and Alan chose each other and enjoyed cooking a barbecue at a small guest house. Kazuto explained how he had been feeling and said that taking a step back had "relieved his worries" and put his mind at ease.
In the show's season finale, the men in Boyfriend chose to leave the house alone or with their partners. When Ryota left home, he asked Kazuto to leave with him, but Kazuto refused. Instead, when Alan and Kazuto were the last to leave, Kazuto explained that he had no clear answer as to how he felt about Alan, but that he believed the relationship they had built during their stay in the green room was special. Wato revealed that he would like to continue seeing Alan in the real world and take things slow, and Alan agreed. They left the green room together and took one last look at the villa before leaving hand in hand.
Since the finale of Boyfriend premiered on July 30, Alan and Kazuto have been tight-lipped about the status of their relationship; they both posted on Instagram thanking fans for supporting the show. Earlier this week, it hit No. 1 on Netflix in Japan. However, the two will be attending a "Boyfriend" reunion special on YouTube on August 3. At that time, there may be a long-awaited romantic update.
