A Britney Spears biopic is in the works, based on her memoir The Woman in Me
Britney Spears' life story has already captivated millions, but it's about to be told in an exciting new way, The Hollywood Reporter revealed Thursday, as Universal Pictures has announced that the superstar is developing a biopic based on her acclaimed memoir, The Woman in Me, and the movie studio has acquired the rights 10 months after the book's release.
According to THR, the film will be directed by Jon M. Chu, director of "Wicked," and produced by Marc Platt, father of "Wicked," "La La Land," and Ben Platt.
And best of all, the film is 100% approved by Spears. She teased the project on X/Twitter on August 1, less than an hour before the official report.
"Excited to share with all my fans that I am working on a secret project with #MarkPratt," she wrote." He always makes my favorite movies ...... Stay tuned."
The Woman in Me hit bookshelves on October 24, 2023 and quickly became a bestseller, selling 2.5 million copies in the United States, according to THR. The celebrity memoir included several revelations about the pop star's personal life, including her relationship with Justin Timberlake and untold stories from her 13-year conservatorship that ended in November 2021. The audiobook, read by actress Michelle Williams, became the fastest-selling audiobook in Simon & Schuster's history and the top Spotify audiobook of 2023.
Whether Spears appears on camera or stays behind the scenes, the upcoming biopic will be her first since 2002, when she made a brief cameo in Austin Powers in Goldmember and starred in the friendship drama Crossroads (which was first streamed earlier this year). This will be her first feature-length project.
