The Devil Wears Prada" sequel is reportedly official.
"The Devil Wears Prada" is finally getting a sequel after 18 years.
On July 8, several news outlets reported that a sequel to the original film was in the works at Disney, and an inside source confirmed the news to Deadline.
I know what you're thinking, but no, sadly, nothing has been announced as to whether or not the main cast (Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci) will return as of now.
Still, we do know some juicy details, like the rumored basic plot. The film will reportedly feature Miranda Priestly (originally played by Streep) trying to carve out a new vision of magazine publishing after the online boom, and her former assistant Emily Charlton (originally played by Blunt) as her big-name advertising executive nemesis The film is reportedly Everyone agrees that it looks delicious.
Casting has yet to be announced (or rather, identified), but we do know that Aline Brosh McKenna will return as screenwriter. McKenna's previous credits include Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Your Place or Mine, and 27 Dresses.
Director David Frankel is also apparently "in talks" to return, as is producer Wendy Finerman.
Since there is no hard evidence as to the likelihood of the return of the top four cast members loved in the original film, let's take a look at some of the breadcrumbs they have spread over the years since the 2006 film was released.
More recently, Hathaway seemed reluctant to participate in the sequel as of March of this year. She told E! News at the time that she and Streep and Blunt "want to make something else," adding, "I don't think a continuation of that story will probably ever happen." (However, a glimmer of hope can be read from Hathaway's interview in April 2024. Hathaway told V Magazine, "We all love each other, and if someone can come up with a way to make it happen, I think it would be crazy not to. But there is a huge difference in technology in the world today. A lot of things are digital now, so it's going to be completely different." (And some clever filmmakers are taking this into account when contemplating a sequel!) .
Emily Blunt has also expressed reluctance to film a sequel, saying on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in February, "Sometimes things should be carefully preserved in this bubble and that's fine."
Is it wishful thinking to speculate that the actresses were trying to catch us off guard? Or will they really not appear in the sequel?
