Dua Lipa transforms a white T-shirt into a skirt, supporting a novel new trend.

Over the weekend, Kylie Jenner wore a strapless denim tube dress that looked like a jean midi skirt tucked up to the armpits. Around the same time, in England, Dua Lipa styled a T-shirt into a skirt for her performance at Glastonbury.

The star took the stage on Friday with a series of outfit changes: lace corset, leather micro-mini, glittery unitard, and the aforementioned shirt and skirt. The white bottom, shaped like a typical large unisex Gildan t-shirt, was studded with rhinestones and wrapped upside down around Dua's waist, secured with a black and silver Bedazzle belt. She paired this skirt with a matching tank top, layered under a black mesh bralette, folded back and tucked into the neckline. The set was custom ordered for Dua by Acne Studios.

But Dua and Kylie did not create this style. From the runway to the celebrity closet, a new trend has arrived where shirts become skirts, skirts become dresses, and dresses become jackets. Follow me here. Balenciaga's Fall 2024 couture collection is heavy on the theme of recycling, with multiple layers of puffer coats sewn together to look like ball gowns, athletic shorts fused together to look off-the-shoulder, and the brand's belt as a slip dress branded belts as slip dresses.

Charli XCX recently wore a black halter dress that looked like a button-down shirt pulled down from the neck for the brand's Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection; the RTW line featured similar dresses made from trench coats, blazers, and leather bombers.

Last week, Emma Chamberlain wore a white button-up, but the shirt was tied in front of her body rather than over her head. The avant-garde archival look is from Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2003 and can be understood as a clear inspiration for this trend and more pointedly for Balenciaga designer Demna. And let's not forget Julia Fox, who, before she was cool, made headlines for wearing a denim waistband as a top.
