This week, rapper Cardi B debuted a slightly shaggy pixie cut. With Cardi's Rapunzel-length hair, sweats and athletic shorts are little more than a change of clothes before the gym. But her short hair is the Princess Diana of 2024.

Cardi B's outfit is a direct reference to Princess Diana's signature off-duty look from the 1990s. A slightly oversized white Harvard crew-neck sweatshirt was paired with gray bike shorts and accessorized with another Princess Diana-esque item: a pair of large black sunglasses. Cardi added sparkle with jumbo diamond studs, a chunky silver chain around her neck, and a black Hermes Birkin bag.

Perhaps the most historically accurate costume element was her retro sneakers. Princess Di had a collection of white sneakers, from Reeboks to Adidas. And Cardi's white Nike Air Jordan 5, of course, debuted in 1990.

Cardi is not the first celebrity to copy Princess Di's iconic clothing recipe. Both Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner are big fans of the oversized sweatshirt and spandex shorts combo. We've seen similar big sweatshirt and small shorts looks from Emily Ratakowski, Hailey Bieber, Taylor Swift, and others.

Along with athleisure and the 90s/y2k aesthetic, both stars and the general public began adopting the style around 2022, when bike shorts started to become a fashion current again. Kudos to Cardi, however, for nailing Princess Diana's detailing.

This stripped-down, casual ensemble is out of the norm for Cardi, who usually opts for a more glamorous look; at this year's Met Gala in May, it took five men to unfurl the huge skirt of her tulle dress. in January, " Bongos" singer rocked a custom skin-tight patterned dress with black strappy stiletto heels and gothic diamond cross earrings.
