'The Watcher' Season 2: What Will Happen?
Despite a controversial unresolved ending (opens in new tab), "The Watcher" will return for another season; according to Deadline (opens in new tab), Netflix renewed this fictional true-crime show (opens in new tab) for another season, Fans and haters alike watched 125 million hours of this series in its first five days, making it one of the biggest debuts in streaming history.Based on a 2018 New York Magazine (opens in new tab) article, although the show moved into a dreamy suburban home, It follows a family who begins receiving creepy and threatening letters from a stalker called The Watcher.
The show was initially billed as a limited series, but has now joined HBO and HBO Max's Big Little Lies, The Flight Attendant, and The White Lotus as a halfway, impressive, and at this point unknown quality Joining a series that has produced a season, will "The Watcher" reach its full potential in its second installment? No, because it has already reached its full chaotic potential and achieved the desired result. Some changes will be made to keep viewers hooked, but the quality will be about the same. But high ratings are worth the money. So here's what we know about the next season and what could come next in terms of storylines.
Season 1 ended without revealing the identity of the Watcher, with a real-life case still unsolved. Dean and Nora Brannock (Bobby Cannavale and Naomi Watts) pulled out of 657 Boulevard and sold it at a loss to an LLC owned by dodgy real estate agent Karen (Jennifer Coolidge). Karen moved in and immediately began remodeling, and the pink marble countertops angered the Watchers (and the neighborhood historical society), who ran out of the house screaming after a night full of terror. Later, a new family moved into the house and the entire Westfield community, including Dean, who lost his property, looked on.
The traditional route of the second season would follow the Brannock family or the new family themselves as they confronted the Watcher, opening up the possibility of a positive identity for Dean himself. It would be really interesting if Dean becomes the Watcher of the new family, if his position in the house and its community becomes that of a specter or a curse. Then it would no longer matter who the Watcher of the Brannock family was. Instead, the previous victims would take up the mantle, for it would create a never-ending cycle (ending if Dean actually makes progress in therapy).
That would be the most interesting storyline. We've seen enough of the Brannock family and everyone is back in the city except Dean. The show has killed off the only character I found interesting throughout the entire show (R.I.P. Nora), but Maureen, Pearl, Jasper, Roger Kaplan, and "John Graff" make for good neighborhood antagonists. Still, unless the new family and whatever supporting characters they bring on board are a breath of fresh air, a second season in the same Westfield will probably continue to be frustrating.
The show, which is part of the Ryan Murphy universe, could become an anthology. Indeed, the show Monster, whose renewal was announced in the same statement, will be an anthology focusing on "other monstrous figures who have influenced society." As for "The Watcher," sharp-eyed fans noticed that Netflix's head of global TV, Bella Bajaria, provided some interesting details in the renewal statement:
"Viewers can't take their eyes off 'Monster' and 'The Watcher. The creative team of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for 'Monster' and Eric Newman for 'Watcher' are outstanding storytellers who have captivated viewers around the world. These two series have been huge hits for two years in a row thanks to the creative voice of Ryan Murphy, who has become a cultural sensation, and we are excited to continue telling stories in the Monster and Watcher universes. "
This "Watcher Universe" suggests that the program may not only focus on a new family living at 657, but may actually become an anthology itself. This possibility is exciting for several different reasons: 1) A change in location; 2) A change of location; 3) A change of location; 4) A change of location; 5) A change of location; 6) A change of location. A season of The Watcher set in Florida would have the same unsettling obsession as Love Is Blind; 2) an entirely new character with a unique neurosis, changing the Watcher's modus operandi a bit; 3) a new character with a new set of characters, one of whom would be the Watcher's "father," one of whom would be the Watcher's "mother."
Most important possibility: there could be an actual ending. Some people were cool with not knowing the ending. I was not (again, largely due to Nora's entrapment). The show made us incredibly paranoid about everyone in town to the point where paranoia turned to irritation. We needed an outlet for the hours of watching and caring. They attempted an unknown ending. I would like to see an actual watcher in Season 2.
Season 1 was renewed fairly quickly on the Netflix timeline, so the streamer is likely hoping to put out another season within a year or so of season 1. Given the superhuman production schedule of Ryan Murphy and co-creators, one would expect a season 2 by the end of 2023.
