Not surprisingly, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced Wednesday that they are effectively leaving the royal family. (Open in new tab) The pair said in a statement that they have just returned from a six-week vacation spent on Vancouver Island, away from the cutthroat British press: "We are stepping down as 'senior' members of the royal family and will strive to become financially independent."

Princess Meghan tearfully stated in the new documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, "Not many people ask me if I'm okay," while Harry and William had a public falling out. BuzzFeed reporter Rosie Gray commented, "I feel like the whole idea and purpose of the Royal Family would be pretty much undermined if they could quit being a part of it."

And Twitter, of course, had plenty to say about the decision.
