Millennials Support Harry & Meghan's Royal Withdrawal, but Baby Boomers Do Not, New Survey Finds

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (opens in new tab) made their most controversial (opens in new tab) move to date this week when they announced they were stepping down as royal executives.

Royal fans around the world were shocked (opens in new tab) by the news, but beyond that initial gut punch of surprise, reactions have been mixed. Some have praised and supported the couple for prioritizing their own mental and emotional well-being and trying to do what they believe is best for their family. Others even criticize the couple for taking a step back.

The Mail on Sunday conducted a survey (open in new tab) on the Sussex couple's "abdication" (open in new tab) (among other royal issues of the day) and found a fairly large generational divide regarding reactions to the decision Here are some highlights of the findings:

The overall results to this question were skewed toward the positive, with 50 percent saying they approve and only 35 percent casting a decisive vote of disapproval.

Sixty-four percent of millennials (ages 19-37) said they would support the decision, compared to only 36 percent of boomers.

Both Boomers and Millennials said that Prince William and Kate Middleton (open in new tab) were better role models than Harry and Meghan (open in new tab), but Millennials were again much more favorable toward the Sussex couple. Only 4% of Baby Boomers voted for Harry and Meghan (open in new tab), while 28% of Millennials were Team Sussex.

The Daily Mail survey also asked readers about the monarchy (open in new tab) in a more general sense. Again, the Boomer generation gave more traditional answers. Only 12% of Boomers said it was time to say goodbye to the monarchy, compared to 29% of Millennials.
