Nancy Pelosi, American Hero, Rips Trump's Speech at the End of SOTU Speech
On Tuesday night, Nancy Pelosi did not hide her emotions at the end of Donald Trump's State of the Union address. After the president refused to address America's gun violence, falsely told the nation that the economy is the best it's ever been (click here for a fact check of the SOTU speech (opens in a new tab)), and ensured the American people a sound bite informing them that they would be the first country to "raise the flag on Mars," Pelosi had it She didn't have it. Before Trump left the podium, the Speaker of the House ripped up the transcript of Trump's speech, threw it on his desk, and left the chamber.
Symbolism.
Asked why she tore up the speech, Pelosi replied, "Given the alternative, it was the polite thing to do."
The SOTU speech came on the eve of the Senate expected to acquit Trump in an impeachment trial. Let's remember: whether Trump is removed from office or not, he will still be impeached.
Twitter's reaction to the rips of the speech was amazing:
Trump refused to shake Pelosi's hand before the speech. And in the middle of his speech, he ousted Fred Guttenberg, the father of Parkland shooting victim Jamie Guttenberg and a vigorous gun reform advocate. The hashtag #ImWithFred trended. Guttenberg apologized Wednesday morning (opens in new tab) for his outburst and said his emotions got the better of him.
