Long leather jackets are a worthwhile investment

Many of us have cropped leather jackets in our closets for those spring and fall days when the temperature is just right. But what about trench-type pieces like those seen on the Coach runway? The sharp street-style look can replace a blazer at the office and be the elongated, elegant power piece we need in 2020. We asked David Mesquita, vice president of Leather Spa, to talk to us about this trend and how to care for your long leather jacket once you've purchased it.

Marie Claire: Is the popularity of long leather jackets growing?

David Mesquita: Yes, because long jackets look important and powerful. I like them as a statement item.

MC: What is the best way to store leather jackets to make them last longer?

DM: Put the jacket in a breathable garment bag (not a plastic bag) and keep it in a place that is not too damp or dry.

MC: How do I spot clean my leather jacket at home?

DM: The trick is to do something immediately. It's best to use a spot cleaner or gently rub a paper towel with a little leather conditioner. Check inconspicuously first!

MC: What are some things to look out for when making a purchase?

DM: Think about the intended use. If you buy a leather jacket "for fashion," don't wear it to protect yourself from the elements. If you really like the jacket, it is worth the investment. It is worth the investment.
