Costco is now refusing to return high-demand items such as rice and toilet paper.

While the news surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak is ever-changing, information about food safety and how to stay healthy is vitally important right now. Here is a comprehensive list of foods to stock up on during this time of distancing yourself from society (opens in new tab), information on changing hours at your local grocery store (opens in new tab), an explanation of "no-call deliveries" (opens in new tab), and a guide on how to help your community and its guide on how to help businesses (opens in new tab).

According to a notice posted at Costco this week, the store will no longer accept returns on key items that many people have hoarded in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

According to a stickup posted by several Costco Instagram accounts (not affiliated with the store itself), toilet paper, paper towels, rice, water, sanitizing wipes, and Lysol are no longer accepted for return.

It is not clear whether this new policy is store-specific or part of a nationwide corporate effort. Costco announced earlier this week that it will place restrictions on certain items that have seen a spike in purchases as customers hoard them. This could be part of that policy, but we reached out to Costco for more details. For the time being, it is best to contact your local Costco for more information on their policies.

Anyway, the commenters have been positive about the new policy, and we hope that fewer people will panic and buy these items or risk unnecessary contact in an attempt to return them later.

"This is great news! I'm sick of people buying toilet paper and thinking they can just return it later when they don't need it," one person wrote.

"It's about time! Too many people are taking advantage of the return policy," wrote another.

Costco is just one of many grocery and big-box stores that have implemented new temporary policies (open in new tab), such as reduced hours and restrictions on certain items, to accommodate the large number of shoppers during the Corona virus outbreak.
