The pencil skirt is a tried and true American classic that transcends time and fashion. Once for the office, this item can now be worn out on the town, to Sunday brunch, or ...... Now you can go anywhere and everywhere. We spoke with fashion historian Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell about the evolution of this style and how to choose a super stylish piece.

Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell Due to fabric shortages during World War II, the pencil skirt was not only a fashion statement, but also a patriotic one. After wartime fabric restrictions were lifted, full skirts made a comeback, but women still paired pencil skirts with peplum jackets, creating an hourglass figure In the 50s, pencil skirts were long and boxy; in the 60s they became shorter and tighter, and mini skirts disappeared as fashion conquered.
